Mom Celebrates New Year By Delivering 'Unique' Twins Born In Two Different Years

Jan 05, 2023 by apost team

Couples that are welcoming babies usually have a laundry list of preparations before the little bundles of joy arrive. There are crumbs to be built, nurseries to be painted, strollers to assemble, showers to throw, and names to be picked out.

The number of tedious tasks is doubled when twins are expected. Two babies means two birthdays, twice as many outfits, and endless diapers. Thankfully, parents have a whole nine months to prepare for their double delivery.

While having twins is still fairly uncommon, the frequency has been steadily climbing. Studies show the "human twin birth rate in the United States rose 76% from 1980 through 2009." Factors, like genetics and sometimes even diet, affect the chances of a pregnancy producing two babies.

One couple in Texas was expecting two bundles of joy in late December 2022. Instead of heading over to a party, the mother-to-be, Kali Jo, was brought by her husband, Cliff Scott, to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton on New Year's Eve.

The little family was ready to welcome twins, but the baby's due date wasn't for another week and a half. However, Kali Jo was scheduled for a C-section during the last few hours of the year.

As the clock ticked closer to midnight, the odds of the babies being born in 2023 seemed more likely. The question arose of whether or not they'd make it in under the wire. Maybe one baby would be born in each year? "We had kind of joked, like, 'wouldn't it be funny if…' with the holiday and New Year's Eve over the weekend," remembered proud daddy Cliff. "It turned out that was more of a possibility than we realized."

A C-section, or cesarean delivery, "is the surgical procedure by which one or more babies are delivered through an incision in the mother's abdomen." The surgery is often suggested in cases where there is an imminent risk to the mother or baby, particularly with twin births.

As Kali Jo's own caesarian progressed, it became more likely that the babies would not only be born a few minutes apart as most twins are but that they would enter the world in two different years.

Just before midnight, little Annie Jo was born at 11:55 p.m. in 2022. Shortly thereafter, she was followed by her sister Effie Rose at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2023. Both infants weighed a healthy 5-plus pounds.

Commenting on this unexpected twist, Kali Jo said, "I love it. I think it is hilarious and just super fun." Given all the excitement and sleeplessness of the night, Cliff admitted, "It kind of happened so quick we haven't processed all of it yet."

Given their unique timing, the twin's mother commented that the dates just make for some one-of-a-kind celebration, saying, "One will always get the glitter and confetti of New Year's Eve and one gets to kick it off with a brand-new year on New Year's Day."

Mommy Kali Jo suggested the twin's timing also gives them something that sets them apart from one another. She commented, "You always still want to make sure they have their own individual personality and know that they are special and unique."

Sounds like there will be much more than just two cakes at all their birthdays to come!
