Mom Boasts Designer Goodie Bag Hospital Gifted Her After Giving Birth

A Manhattan mom has revealed that she got a different kind of bundle of joy after giving birth at a New York hospital. Sophia, who goes by the username @manhattan_mama on TikTok, showed off a designer goodie bag filled with Chanel luxury cosmetic items to her followers and said that they had been gifts from New York Presbyterian Hospital's Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she had delivered her babies two times.
Sophia, 42, explained in her TikTok video that she was first gifted a $200 luxury goodie bag when she gave birth to her daughter, now five years old. She found the second gift bag from her son's birth in 2019 while organizing closets and thought it might be fun to do an unboxing, per the New York Post. Her TikTok video received over 3.9 million views and thousands of questions and comments before it was deleted.
Chanel has been pledging millions of special gifts containing cosmetic and skin care products to all the pregnant mothers who choose to give birth at the Weill Cornell Medical Center through its longstanding partnership since 2004. The facility takes care of over 7,000 newborn babies every year and charges an estimated $11,900 for natural baby deliveries, according to KHN.
The idea behind gifting new mothers goodie bags, also known as push presents or baby baubles, became popular in Western cultures with the advent of the popularity of social media. While it's typically the baby's father who showers the mom with gifts, even family members, friends and hospitals prepare the goodie bags to acknowledge the pregnant person's nine-month experience.

Inside Sophia's Chanel gift bag was a full bottle of Chanel Gabrielle perfume ($90), a Le Rouge Duo Ultra Tenue lipstick ($45) and a Le Volume de Chanel mascara ($38), according to New York Post. She was surprised by the contents as she expected smaller, sample-sized items. Chanel also included a card congratulating the hospital for its excellence in Obstetrics and Gynecology and mothers for their "very special deliveries."
In another TikTok video, Sophia, who works as a nurse, said that she didn't bother opening the gifts as soon as she got them because it's not important to her. She recalled giving the first Chanel gift bag to the wife of her old apartment's superintendent.
She clarified that she didn't get this perk because she was admitted to the hospital's private room as a high-tax-bracket earner, but she simply made good use of her insurance. Her OBGYN is also affiliated with the hospital.
"I'm just a person that used my health insurance and gave birth. It wasn't like a private room thing."
Moms following Sophia's video were both thrilled and piqued with jealousy. One mother exclaimed that her hospital did not give her a push present, while another said she got a water cup with a crinkly straw from the facility. One mom joked that she got "trauma" at a Brooklyn hospital.
A user also commented that Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles does the same, as she was given Ralph Lauren and Dior toiletries when she had her son.
Another mom joked that she would forget her child at the hospital before she'd forget to open a Chanel gift bag. Amused by her comment, Sophia decided to send the luxury products to her, but she will keep the bag itself as a memento to use for trinkets from her children's birth.
