NICU has strict rules about people touching the patients. However, they honored a request that a mother made for her child.

Parents will sometimes do anything to make one of their kids' dreams come true. Such was the case with the Marotta family. Jessica Marotta and her husband Mike had one child named Mikey. Mikey decided one day when he was about three years old that he wanted to have a baby brother. He became almost obsessed with the concept. It was all he would think about and all he would ask for during the holidays and things like that.

His parents wanted to make it a dream come true, so they started trying to conceive. Months passed and nothing seemed to be working. Eventually, they had tried for a full 12 months to no avail. At that time, they sought help from a fertility specialist. The first positive pregnancy test finally happened, and they thought they would be able to give him the baby.

Unfortunately, that baby didn't make it. Jessica started having complications when she was 11 weeks pregnant, and she lost the baby. Doctors could tell that the baby was a boy, which added extra to the crushing feelings that they felt about losing it. The ultrasound also showed that the baby had a condition called Trisomy 13. Trisomy 13 is a fatal condition for infants. Thus, the baby would have died even if he had been born. That's no consolation, but it would have been worse for her to have lost him after he was born.

The Marotta's were crushed after this incident, and they pretty much gave up hope of having another child.

Mikey, of course, did not understand. He kept asking about a little brother and when he was going to have one. His parents finally just started telling him that it might not ever happen and that he was just going to have to accept that.

It broke their heart to say that to him, but it was the truth.

Something spectacular happened during Mikey's kindergarten years. Jessica found out she was pregnant again, and her hope was restored. The whole pregnancy was a stressful one during which she worried about having a miscarriage. The baby's weight was very small, and they had to do an emergency cesarean section to retrieve him. He ended up spending 62 weeks in the NICU.

Mikey became the first little sibling to be allowed to hold a baby skin-to-skin while he was in NICU. That experience probably added to their bond. The Baby, Jake, made it okay, and today the two brothers are closer than ever.
