Mom And Daughter Give All They’ve Got In 'Footloose' Dance Routine

Jun 07, 2021 by apost team

With so many people stuck at home in the last year, some people began to wallow in their boredom. After all, there's only so much television someone can watch before they long for something else to do, right?

While some lamented the long days, other people seized the opportunity to let their creative flags fly. For some that meant cooking up a storm and trying out new recipes, while others took up new hobbies, ranging from painting to learning a musical instrument. Meanwhile, others already had various talents but decided to create a new outlet for their expression, for example by making a YouTube channel.

This was the case for a mother-daughter dancing duo from South Carolina named Erica and Izzy Pike. A professional dancer, Erica already had her hobby picked out, but magic happened when she teamed up with her daughter Izzy to create a fun video that featured the two of them dancing up a storm to the tune of "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins.

Uploaded in April 2020, the video shows the mother-daughter duo beaming on screen as they dance their hearts out, not unlike the actor Kevin Bacon did in the 1984 movie. It's no surprise then to learn that their video went viral online. In a time when people's spirits were down, the Pikes' video likely helped to bring some much-needed joy to people's lives.

The video was such a success online that Erica revealed it's inspired them to start their own YouTube channel, which means that this isn't the only bit of joy the mother and daughter will be bringing to the world.

The song "Footloose" was written and performed by Kenny Loggins, and it became the anthem for the 1984 film of the same name. In the movie, the character of Ren, played by Kevin Bacon, moves with his mother to a small town that has outlawed dancing because of a tragic accident. In the end, however, the young man convinces the town about dancing's power to heal and to act as a catharsis.

In this way, it was the perfect song for Erica Pike, and her young daughter, Izzy, to make this video in order to dance their way through quarantine. Instead of letting things drag her down, Pike, a professional dancer and homemaker from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, enlisted the help of Izzy to create a fun and creative dance video to the famous song. It is clear from watching the video that both mother and daughter share the love of dance and have fun with all the complex moves and costume changes in the routine.

Erica and Izzy put a lot of thought and creativity into their routine. Aided by the uplifting and fast-paced music of the song, the mother-daughter duo put together a range of moves that catch the energy and enthusiasm of the song. They even incorporate various locations in their house for the video, from the driveway to the porch swing.

Another highlight that shows the twosome's commitment to fun is the various wardrobe changes throughout the video. With some clever editing, it appears that the costumes change in a matter of moments. At one point in the video, they are joined by Nick — Erica's husband and Izzy's dad. While they dance around him, he juggles while riding a unicycle.

Erica, whose past dance credits include work with the Carolina Opry Theater and also aboard cruise ships, has found a way to pass on her dancing skills to Izzy, who has clearly been bitten by the performance bug. Meanwhile, Nick is just as talented as his wife and daughter — in fact, he's a professional comedian, acrobat and juggler, which explains why he's able to effortlessly perform what he does. What an incredibly talented family, and what's more, they're not just keeping their talents to themselves but sharing them with the world in a bid to bring a smile to someone's face.

It is clear by watching this video that, despite the tough times the world is going through, it's still possible to have fun and look for ways to express ourselves. Erica and Izzy are not letting anything get them down and are having fun dancing instead of dwelling on negativity.

The viral success of the video even inspired Erica to start a YouTube channel that centers on Izzy. Named Izzy T.V., the channel shows the younger Pike dancing and lip-synching to a variety of numbers. There is even another video of her dancing with her mom to a medley of Broadway songs.

The Pike family has even amassed fans already, with one commenter writing on their "Footloose" video:

"Omg this has to be the most amazing video I have seen [in] a very long time A mother and daughters bond in amazing. Thos [sic] is something amazing you both have. I absolutely loved your video. Make more lol"
