Missing person stories do not usually come with a happy ending like this.

Last Friday, two sisters disappeared from their Northern California home after following a deer trail outside of their house. Eight-year-old Leia Carrico and her five-year-old sister Caroline wandered far enough away from their home to get lost for two days.

The scared girls were finally found by local officials after searchers picked up on a trail of granola bar wrappers. The girls' mother was able to confirm that the wrappers were from a brand of snacks that they had in their house, leading investigators to conclude that the girls were nearby. A trail of bootprints matching that of the girls' shoes also helped officials to find the sisters.

The search crew included the National Guard, search and rescue dogs, helicopters, firefighters, policemen, and military response teams. It was truly a group effort that led to the successful location of the missing girls. The team of searchers knew that they were working against the clock and weather to find the girls. Worries of dehydration and hypothermia became more of an issue as time marched on.

Fortunately for the girls, their participation in a local 4-H club helped them to know what to do to survive their time in the rugged wilderness.
