When 75-year-old Sandra Young told her sister that she would be coming for a visit with the two grandchildren that she was raising, it seemed like a safe enough plan. However, things quickly became scary when Sandra never showed up for the visit. Since Sandra had been showing some early signs of dementia, relatives had an additional reason for concern.

However, one gas station employee was able to recognize the missing woman by her haircut when she came into the store and asked to use the bathroom.

With no cell phone, Sandra was impossible to locate, leaving her family and authorities alike scared about her whereabouts. When a few days had passed and there was still no way to get in touch with Sandra or the young children, the little family was then considered “at risk”.

According to CBS Sacramento, the police decided to use an emergency alert system to issue a warning about her disappearance while also taking advantage of social media. The authorities sent out alert texts to all the cellphones in the area and then posted Sandra’s photo on their Twitter account.

Barbie Liden is a gas station employee who had noticed photos of Sandra on the internet; however, she never expected to actually see her.

On Thanksgiving morning, Barbie was at the register when a tired customer came into the store looking for a bathroom. Barbie couldn’t seem to simply brush the woman aside as a regular gas station attendee.

Recognizing Sandra by her haircut, Barbie went back online to get a second look at the photo of the missing woman as she told CBS Sacramento. That was when she realized that it truly was Sandra that was using her restroom.

As soon as the restroom door closed, Barbie grabbed for the phone and alerted the police that the missing family was at the gas station. The officers arrived at the station before Sandra even had a chance to get out of the restroom.

According to NBC Bay Area News, it seems that Sandra got lost on the drive to her sister’s house and had been traveling in circles for days. While she and the children were exhausted, they were all safe and injury-free.

Now, Barbie Liden is being considered a hero and Sandra’s family is forever grateful for her quick thinking and willingness not to simply ignore the tugging intuition she had that Sandra wasn’t a regular customer.

We are so glad that this family was found and that Sandra can now receive the care that she needs! What did you think of this story? Tell us your thoughts on it below. Pass this article along to your friends and family.
