Losing a pet is always a heart-wrenching experience. A California man’s amazing story of being reunited with his lost pet parrot is making news because it was years in the making, and it bridges two languages.

A British man living in California man named Darren Chick lost his parrot about four years ago. After such a long period, when he received a call asking if he was missing an African parrot, his initial response was no. But thanks to the detective skills of a determined veterinarian employee, he was reunited with his parrot Nigel.

Nigel’s initial response to being reunited with his owner was to bite him, a response that is understandable when his unusual journey home is examined. The story of Nigel’s strange journey back to Darren Chick begins in Torrance, California. That is when he was spotted by a woman named Julissa Sperling who thought he looked a lot like a parrot she had seen on a missing pet poster.

Julissa responded to the ad and gave the parrot to Teresa Micco, thinking she was reuniting it with its owner according to the BBC. Although Teresea quickly realized that the parrot was not hers, because she worked for a veterinarian, she checked to see if could find the parrot’s owner. Her research paid off and she found some sales records that led her to the parrot’s true owner, Darren Chick.

Darren was thrilled to be reunited with his lost parrot and even shed a few tears. Darren quickly noticed that Nigel no longer spoke with a British accent. In fact, he used quite a few Spanish phrases in addition to saying the name Larry regularly. Clearly Nigel’s ability to escapes and find adventure had led him to a most interesting life.
