Missing Labrador Retriever Reunites With Family After Five Long Years

Back in 2015, The Humane Society of the United States assisted authorities with rescuing 166 dogs and cats from a severe neglect situation in rural Adams County, Ohio. One of the dogs rescued was a brown Labrador retriever named Chuckie who, after being rescued, was reunited with his family who had been missing for more than five years.

If you've ever had a pet go missing, you know it can be a heart-wrenching experience. Pets, for many of us, are like children. We take care of them and watch them grow. They turn to us to take care of all of their basic needs and make sure their desires get fulfilled. When a pet goes missing, it's like we lose a piece of ourselves, too.

Sometimes, you get lucky. Pets—dogs, especially—are excellent at finding their way home when they get lost. However, all too often, that simply is not the case. Though we have microchip technology, individuals often do not keep the information on the chips regularly updated.

Alternatively, individuals may find a pet and not think to have it scanned for a microchip, keeping the pet from returning to its rightful owner.

After a while, you tend to give up on the idea that your beloved friend may come back. Some people give it a month, while others give it two or three months before they decide that whatever happened, their pet won't return home.

Chuckie, an adorable and loving brown lab, got lucky, though.

According to their video on YouTube, The Humane Society of the United States rescued Chuckie, along with 165 other dogs and cats, from a rural area in Ohio. Chuckie's owners, located in Indiana, hadn't seen him in just over five years. The Humane Society found Chuckie chained towards the front of the property.

Once rescued, they checked him for a microchip, which contained his owner's information. Watching Chuckie see his family again for the first time in years is enough to bring a tear to your eye. People have said before that dogs are absolutely loyal, but you can watch Chuckie when he sees his owners.

He's so excited, pulling and tugging at the leash to get to them, his tail wagging non-stop. And you can tell his owners are just as excited to see him, too. Given the unfortunate situation, Chuckie was kept in for quite some time, he was in remarkably good health and high spirits, though — clearly just happy to be home again.

In fact, Chuckie pulled and tugged at his leash, trying his hardest to get back to the arms of his owners. The Humane Society worker holding him finally gave up, letting him run straight to his family. The four women, who had loved and cared for Chuckie prior to him going missing, were overjoyed at having him home. Dogs are definitely some of the most loyal animals we've ever seen. Despite having been kept in relatively inhumane conditions for years on end, Chuckie remained in good spirits, excited to see his family again.

He could have easily become aggressive or been scared, but it's clear Chuckie knew that he was going to be well taken care of once again. Watching Chuckie reunite with his family is absolutely heartwarming. He doesn't hold back on telling them 'hello' and you can tell that he recognizes them, even from a distance

No one can tell you that a dog doesn't know who their owners are. There's a reason, after all, that we call them man's best friend. At the end of the day, watching The Humane Society of the United States reunite Chuckie with his owners is enough to make most of us cry. No one likes to lose a pet - but there's almost nothing better than being reunited with a pet you never thought you'd see again.
