Missing Dog Walks Over Fifty Miles Back To Her Former Home

Have you ever gotten lost when you were out for a drive or a walk? It happens to the best of us. We end up going one or two blocks too far and are just a little bit confused about where exactly we are. Then, we have to turn around and go back to where we need to be. A yellow lab from Missouri, however, did something even more extraordinary: After going missing from her home, she showed up 57 miles from where she currently lived with her owners. The location? Her former home.

Let's face it: dogs can make a habit of getting lost. All too often, they escape accidentally or get loose while on a walk and take off in the direction of something interesting, not realizing that they don't know where they're supposed to be. Realistically speaking, though, dogs are relatively intelligent creatures and often bred to follow specific scents. Sometimes, with a little luck, they can find their way back to where they belong.

In the case of Cleo, a yellow lab from Missouri, however, she did something even more extraordinary. After going missing, Cleo showed up at her home a few days later. Remarkably, though, it was not at her current but at her former home – 57 miles from where she currently lived with her owners. Cleo actually showed up at the home her owners had lived two years ago!

Animals are pretty incredible when it comes to finding their way to where they belong. It's possible that Cleo associated this house with her "home" from when she was younger and found a way to get back to it.

There have been similar stories in the past of dogs and cats both, traveling exceptionally long distances to find their owners. In some cases, owners chose to rehome their pets when they moved, only to find them on their doorstep a few weeks later, a long way from where they used to be.

As CBS reports, once reunited with her, Cleo's owners did check her microchip and found their old address still attached to her information. They think it's possible, given the circumstances, that someone found Cleo, checked her microchip at a local veterinarian office, and dropped her off at the address associated with her chip. It's difficult to say for certain exactly what happened, though. Cleo may very well have just gone to the only location that she actively remembered her way back to. Either way, her family was overjoyed to be reunited with her!

We all know what it's like to have a pet go missing. You worry constantly about their wellbeing, uncertain if they are hurt, injured, or lost. Alternatively, you worry that someone else may have picked them up, deciding to adopt them themselves without ever knowing that they had owners.

Overall, potentially losing a pet can be heartwrenching. However, when Cleo showed up at her old home, the new homeowners were able to successfully contact Cleo's parents, who came almost immediately to get her. In the video, you can see just how happy Cleo is to see her people. Clearly, she was doing her best to find her way back to them, whatever happened to her along the way.

Do you believe it's possible she made her way back to her old home from memory or did a good samaritan drop her off, thinking they were returning her back to her home? Let us know what your theory is below, and feel free to let us know if you've had a pet do something this crazy before.
