'Miserable' Woman Leaves Husband Because He Took Custody Of His Long-Lost Son

Jul 25, 2022 by apost team

Parenting is a hard job. There are many challenges that come with raising a child and helping them become the best possible version of themselves. On top of that, having to learn how to help them work through their emotions can be very difficult at times, not to mention pretty demanding on the parents’ end. While some people dream of becoming a parent, others opt for a childfree lifestyle.

A 30-year-old woman opted for the latter. When she and her husband first met four years ago, they both agreed that they didn’t want to have children. Their life was pretty great in the few years afterward as they settled down, got stable jobs, moved into a nice home, and even had a dog.

However, that all changed in 2021 when the husband found out that he had a son from a friendly fling before his relationship with his wife started. The boy’s mother never told the husband about the child. After she passed away, the boy was sent to live with his grandmother, but that proved to be too difficult, thus leading him to his biological father.

This has left a strain on the 30-year-old woman and her husband’s relationship to the point where the woman decided she no longer wanted to be married. However, the woman’s family doesn’t agree with her choice and has even tried convincing her to rethink her decision, leaving a strain on their relationship as well. Her sister went to Reddit in April 2022 to see what advice Redditors could offer but was surprised to hear what they had to say.

Starting off her Reddit post, the original poster (OP) explained that she and her family have really grown to love her sister’s husband. The couple had a beautiful life together, including good jobs, a nice house and even a dog. However, that changed after the couple, who wanted to be childfree, discovered some surprising news.

“About a year ago, he found out that he had a son,” OP said.

“The mother was an acquaintance he slept with six years ago, who had never told him about him. She passed away, and her elderly mother has too many health issues for her to have custody. So he went to live with them.”

OP explained how everyone in the family has really “grown to love” the son – except for her sister. In fact, her sister was so against being a stepmother that she decided to separate from her husband. OP explained, “She said she loves her husband, but she can’t take being a stepmother anymore, and that everything from not being able to watch adult shows at all hours of the day to asking him to do his homework makes her miserable.”

OP continued, “Her husband is absolutely devastated, as they have always had a happy marriage and still love each other – she’ll be the first one to say this.” Even though her sister’s husband also didn’t want kids, he knew he had to step up to care for his son. Sadly, the young boy had already been through several life changes and was working through his grief over losing his mother, and now he would be losing his stepmother and the family dog, as she belonged to OP’s sister.

During a family gathering, OP spoke with her sister. “I told my sister it seemed wrong and selfish to hurt not only her husband but also her stepson this way, after not even a full year of trying to make it work,” she explained. This didn’t go over well with her sister, and the pair haven’t spoken since. While many family members sided with OP, Redditors took a different stance.

Many Reddit users shared their opinions in the comments, letting OP know that she was in the wrong in this situation. One user commented, “You don’t actually know what her life has been since the boy came to live with them… She tried for almost a year. She’s not happy with the situation so she’s leaving. What would you want her to do? Stay and be miserable?” The user also asked, “Do you think it would be better for the kid to live with someone who doesn’t want to live with him? Who doesn’t want to take care of him?”

“You have nothing to do with this but insist on making your opinions known when your sister did not ask for your help or advice. It’s a tough situation to be in but that’s the thing, you aren’t in it. She is and she does not want to be a parent. It takes a HUGE amount of self-awareness and emotional intelligence to say ‘I love you but this isn’t the future I want so I’m going to walk away instead of making all of us miserable for the rest of our lives.’ You need to apologize to your sister and support her in what is an extremely difficult time for her. Their family situation is not about you.”
