Miranda Lambert Opens Up About Life After Her Divorce From Blake Shelton

Miranda Lambert does not often revisit the end of her first marriage. When she did, she kept it blunt.
Speaking on Ross Golan’s songwriting podcast, “And the Writer Is...,” the country music star looked back on the period after her split from Blake Shelton, and she chose her words plainly and without hedging. “I got divorced and that sucks for anyone, especially in the public eye, especially on tour, especially in the middle of a very public career, two of us, you know what I mean?” she said. “It just was a really not fun time.”
The pair had been together for 10 years and married for four, living in Shelton’s hometown of Tishomingo, Oklahoma. When the marriage ended, Lambert left small-town life behind.
What she did next became the story. “I, in the meantime, had moved back to Nashville full-time, and so I dove headfirst into songwriting,” she recalled. She wrote around 75 songs during that stretch alone, a figure that gives a sense of how much she had to say.
Lambert has long been known for writing from lived experience, and the aftermath of the split gave her more than enough material. “I gathered up all of my friends and relationships from all of the previous years and just used it,” she said. “Used the misery.”
She did not describe the period only in terms of pain. Lambert called the creative stretch “kind of magical,” and said she had missed writing more than she realized. The heartbreak was real. So was the creative momentum it produced.

The songs became a record. Lambert has said she used that material to make her sixth studio album, “The Weight of These Wings,” a double album that marked a creative turning point. She has described the writing as raw and unfiltered, with nothing about her life kept out of the process, including the late nights at honky-tonks in her first months back in Nashville. She has compared the freedom of that process with her earlier album “Platinum,” saying the new songs came from a rawer place.
She also credits the period with changing her as an artist. “I think I really grew as a vocalist and a songwriter because I spent so much of my downtime with a guitar in my hand for the first time,” she said. The comment points to a different side of a painful chapter: a musician rediscovering her craft while the rest of her life was in flux.
The split itself played out quickly and quietly. In a joint statement at the time, the couple wrote: “This is not the future we envisioned, and it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately.” Shelton later said that, with no children and a prenuptial agreement, the legal process was over within a nine- or 10-day waiting period. Neither has said much about the reasons since.
Both have since built new lives. Shelton is married to Gwen Stefani, and Lambert is married to Brendan McLoughlin. What Lambert offered here was not a verdict on the past but a look at what she made from it, one song at a time.
