Claudia Martinez has had one dream her whole life – to be a doctor. It is all she has ever wanted to do.

However, during her time at the University of Houston, Claudia thought that her dreams were going to be crushed. The young woman began to experience excruciating headaches and frequent loss of consciousness. Doctors began to run every single test known to man on her until they figured out what the problem was. It ended up being a debilitating condition known as Chiari Malformation. This medical problem occurs when the brain tissue begins to extend into the spinal cord. It can easily cause paralysis in some people.

Claudia was immediately sent to a neurosurgeon after she received her diagnosis. He informed her that she would need to undergo brain surgery ASAP. If she didn’t, she could be paralyzed from her neck down. Because of this grim diagnosis, Claudia scheduled her first brain surgery within that very week.

We can only imagine how strong Claudia must have been to fight against this terrible disease. Luckily, she had the mental fortitude she needed to stay positive throughout the ordeal. She stated that she has undergone six major surgeries on her brain since she was diagnosed.

Claudia thought that she would only have to have one surgery. She knew that life was about to be different for her, but she figured she would just go on to medical school after the first surgery. However, that wasn’t the case.

The last surgery was performed in February of 2017. During this particular surgery, Claudia suffered a stroke. It caused her to lose all functions below her neck. She said that she had to relearn how to do the most basic daily activities. Luckily, her mother was there to help her. She helped her daughter shower and dress every day.

Claudia did not let this setback stop her. She eagerly started therapy at TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehab Hospital as soon as she could. It was here that she learned, through an exoskeleton, how to walk on her own again. This amazing young lady is now attending her final year at UTHealth. Not only that, she is set to graduate soon!
