Mila Kunis Says Marrying Ashton Kutcher Felt Different for One Important Reason

Few Hollywood love stories have unfolded quite like Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s. Long before they became husband and wife, the two spent years working together as teenagers on “That ‘70s Show.” At the time, however, romance wasn’t even on the radar.

Looking back during a 2018 appearance on the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast, Kunis admitted there were “no feelings whatsoever” between them while filming the sitcom.

“It’s the weirdest story that nobody believes, but it’s the God’s honest truth,” she said. She even questioned whether a relationship would have worked had they gotten together back then.

“Had we connected [in the past] would we have connected? No,” she explained. “The people that we were back then would never be together.” Still, there’s one thought that occasionally crosses her mind. “It’s just such a bummer that we missed out on 20 years together.”

Instead, life took both actors in different directions before eventually bringing them back together in 2012. Three years later, they married during an intimate ceremony in California and have since welcomed two children, daughter Wyatt and son Dimitri.

More than a decade later, their relationship continues to stand out in Hollywood, where long-lasting marriages can sometimes feel like the exception rather than the rule.

So what has allowed their relationship to thrive after all these years?

According to Kunis, the answer has less to do with romance and more to do with something that began decades before they ever started dating.

Speaking on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Kunis reflected on why her relationship with Kutcher has felt different from many others. She explained that their strongest advantage wasn’t simply falling in love. It was the years they spent getting to know each other before becoming a couple.

Because they met as teenagers, both had a front-row seat to one another’s biggest life changes.

“But he knew me through all of them, and I knew him through all of it, through like the good, the bad, the ugly… and vice versa,” she said.

“So when we reconnected, there was no getting to know each other, there was no, ‘But let me tell you all these hidden secrets.’”

She added that nothing has ever needed to be hidden between them because their relationship has always been built on trust and respect.

“Our fundamentals, our foundation, everything is built on respect,”

she explained. That history has also made it easier for them to accept change. “He’s not going to go, ‘Well, that’s not the person I married.’ He’ll be like, ‘Okay, let’s go for a ride.’”

Only then did Kunis reveal what she believes has truly made their marriage work.

“I mean, I married my best friend. But to back it up, when we reconnected, I was 27. And I was a very different person than I was when I was 25, let alone when I was 21 or 19.”

“You go through different changes and you evolve. Hopefully you grow, you become different.”

For Kunis, that’s the real secret. They didn’t fall in love as teenagers. They found each other again after growing into the people they were always meant to become.
