Michelle Obama’s High School in Chicago just gave the former FLOTUS a big honor.  Whitney M. Young Magnet High School named their new $4.3 million athletic complex after their former student turned First Lady. Of course, Michelle had an emotional ‘thank-you’ to give in return for the honor.

After a year of construction, the Michelle Obama Athletic Complex was officially unveiled for the high school and community’s use. The area contains football, lacrosse and soccer fields, as well as a running track, softball and baseball diamonds, batting cages, and more.

Michelle Obama could not attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony in person but she made sure to send her former high school her thanks. In a video message, the famous alumni said

“Whitney Young has played such a foundational role in my life. It's where I first started to branch outside my neighborhood and see the possibilities that lay right in front of me. I never played a sport at Whitney Young. My jersey's not in any glass case.”

“This is a facility for everybody," Michelle added. "For athletes and non-athletes, for weekend warriors and fitness fanatics, for every student, every parent, every community member.”

Chris Cassidy, athletic director for Whitney Young High School, told NBC Chicago the complex’s name is fitting since the former FLOTUS was so committed to health and fitness among young people in and out of the white house.

“Her mission when she was First Lady was all about fitness and keeping kids fit,” Cassidy said. “This complex is not just for our athletic teams. All our P.E. classes can use it.”
