"After lunch, when we said that final goodbye, when we got into a car — me and Barack and Malia, who was there with us — and then Sasha drove off on her own and said that last goodbye, that’s when we were like [crying noises]," Michelle said.

Besides tearing up that Sasha is moving on to the next chapter of her life, Michelle said she feels "excited" for her and Malia. “I’m excited for my girls to grow up and to become independent,” she said. However, the mom of two did relent it can become a little sad knowing you can't get the old times back.

"You feel a little melancholy that they will never be the little ones that sit on your lap and listen to your every word and look at you adoringly. Those days are over," Michelle said.

Malia is currently studying at Harvard University just like her parents, however, the Obama's have asked that Sasha's university remain private. “Time just goes so fast. But like so many experiences in the last 10 years, we wanted to make it feel as normal as possible, given our family’s circumstances,” she told People magazine

With her girls being gone, Michelle has realized that she and Barack now have ample time to spend together. “We’ve rediscovered all these little pockets of time, just me and Barack, that for a couple of decades have been filled with school events or sports practices,” she told People

“We’re taking full advantage of this new normal, simply spending time with each other and remembering what brought us together in the first place. Sometimes I’ll get a glimpse of him and just go, ‘Hey you! Where have you been for 21 years?’"
