During her eight years as First Lady, Michelle Obama did many notable things for the United States, particularly her emphasis on combatting childhood obesity.

Last week, the former first lady continued her mission of helping the children of America by donating many gifts to Randle Highlands Elementary School in Washington, D.C. as part of Ellen DeGeneres’ Greatest Night of Giveaways.

Randle Highlands Elementary is in the southeast part of Washington and is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city. Kristie Edwards, the school’s principal, says that about 65 percent of their students are either homeless or in the foster care system.

Because most of the kids come from difficult backgrounds, Edwards says that the school’s staff tries to make as loving an environment as possible. The school provides breakfast and lunch for needy students and even has a washer and dryer on the premises so students can come to school each day with clean clothes.

Michelle arrived at Randle Highlands Elementary and met Principal Edwards at the school’s computer lab. Edwards and the staff and students present in the lab were awestruck to see the former first lady, who informed them that she was there on behalf of Ellen’s Greatest Night of Giveaways.

Asking what the staff felt the school needed most, Edwards replied that the institution’s technology was outdated. Michelle then presented Edwards with a box containing $100,000 in cash for the school to spend on whatever they felt would benefit the students the most.

Taking to the PA system, Michelle then informed the rest of the school that she was in the building and asked students and teachers to meet in the gym for a special assembly. Once everywhere was seated, Michelle announced that in addition to the $100,000 donation, she had many more surprises for Randle Highlands Elementary.

The former first lady began by saying that since the school did not have a basketball court, they would be building one in the schoolyard, even showing a mockup of the forthcoming addition. Michelle then revealed an even bigger surprise for the students and staff.

To ensure that each and every child at the institution has a chance to achieve their dreams, Michelle revealed that the computer lab would be receiving new computers donated by Apple and that each teacher would be getting a new laptop.

In even bigger news, Michelle announced that each student would also be the recipient of a new iPad. Students and teacher alike couldn't hide their happiness at the generosity shown to them, enthusiastically cheering Michelle on in gratitude.

Michelle said in an Instagram post later, "I had so much fun putting a smile on all of these little faces from Randle Highlands Elementary School in Washington, D.C."
