Marriage is hard work
Michelle first stated what everyone knows, that a successful marriage is hard work. And she also said that while many people are under the impression that she and Barack have a perfect, easy marriage, they have had their ups and downs like every other couple.
She admitted they have actually gone through marriage counseling as per Express:
"But it’s (marriage) a hard thing. Barack and I understood that about each other. There was counseling for Barack and I. We both learned that we have to work through challenging times. We worked at getting marriage counseling because sometimes we can’t do this on our own."
She has previously said that she picked someone she respected for her marriage partner. She believes that marriage is a team sport, and it's important for both partners to be strong. You don't want a weak player on your team, after all.
