The award-winning actor Michael J. Fox hit a milestone on Wednesday, June 9. The “Back to the Future” star celebrated his 60th birthday with his wife, Tracy Polan, who posted a photo of herself and Fox relaxing on the beach to commemorate her husband’s special day.
Fox is a revered actor whose work goes all the way back to the late 1970s. He rose to fame with his role on “Family Ties,” an NBC sitcom set in Columbus, Ohio, during the Ronald Regan presidency. Fox played a millionaire entrepreneur named Alex while Pollan starred as his artistic girlfriend. While the show had a respectable run of seven seasons, Fox really became a star, a bonafide icon of the '80s, thanks to the wildly popular “Back to the Future” film franchise. The actor played the movie’s protagonist, a high school student named Marty McFly. As fans know, McFly meets mad scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Loyd), who accidentally sends the 17-year-old student back in time to 1955. The movie was a hit, and director Robert Zemeckis released two follow-ups to the original, “Back to the Future Part 2” in 1989 and “Back to the Future Part 3” in 1990.
Tragically, doctors diagnosed Fox with Parkinson's disease in 1991 at the age of 29 during the peak of his career; however, he didn't go public with the news until 1998. He slowly took on fewer acting roles due to his worsening condition. Some of his final feature film roles include “Atlantis: The Lost Empire” (2001), “Stuart Little 2” (2002) and “Stuart Little 3” (2005). In the years since, he's turned his focus to television roles and activism for Parkinson's disease, even establishing the Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson's Research.
Now, the actor is celebrating his 60th birthday, undoubtedly with his family by his side. Married to fellow actor Pollan for over 30 years, the couple met while filming “Family Ties” and have been together ever since.
“Happy birthday to my favorite person, love of my life💗Have the bestest day!” Pollan wrote alongside the birthday post. The photo, which the couple took in front of the white sands and emerald water of the ocean, features Pollan and Fox sitting intimately close to each other on a deck.
The couple is widely known for their strong love and support for each other. After initially meeting on the set of “Family Ties” — where Pollan played Fox’s on-screen girlfriend — the couple dated and eventually married in 1988, before having their first child together 10 months later in 1989. In total, they have four children, including 32-year-old Sam, who shares his father's good looks, twin daughters Schuyler and Aquinnah, 26, and their youngest daughter Esmé, who is 19-years-old. They all appear to be a very close family, frequently attending events together and sharing photos on social media.
In an interview with People magazine from 2018, Pollan and Fox shared the details on how they make their over 30-year marriage work. Explaining how to have a successful long marriage, Pollan said, "Just give each other the benefit of the doubt. He assumes I'm doing the best I can."
Fox added, "Find the best things about you and the best things about life and celebrate them."
In the same interview, Pollan discussed what Fox has added to her life, saying, "So much, obviously."
"His optimistic worldview about everything is just so powerful. Michael doesn't worry about the future. I'm completely the opposite." They added that it's "us against the world," and that their devotion and support for one another couldn't be clearer.
Fox recently addressed “the future,” a theme throughout his life, in his 2020 memoir “No Time Like the Future.” According to his publisher, in the book “Michael shares personal stories and observations about illness and health, aging, the strength of family and friends, and how our perceptions about time affect the way we approach mortality.” As for what is to come for the 60-year-old actor, Fox opened up about his plans — or lack thereof — in a 2020 interview with The Guardian. On the one hand, Fox has continued to star on prominent television shows like “The Good Wife,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and most recently “The Good Fight.” On the other hand, Fox is keeping the future open.
“I don’t make a lot of plans. I’m a little – I sometimes wonder how… ” Fox said, trailing off.
“But as limited as I am in some regards, if you’d told me when I was diagnosed that I’d have this life now and do the things that I do, I’d have said, ‘I’ll take it,’” Fox added. “I can move around – it takes some planning, but I can move. I can think, I can communicate and I can express affection. What else do you want?”
Whatever the future holds for Fox, we wish him a very happy 60th birthday and hope he’s enjoying it with his family, friends and loved ones.
