Michael Douglas Reflects On His Nearly 20-Year Marriage With Catherine Zeta-Jones

Hollywood movie stars Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have been together for an impressive 20 years and are still just as in love as they were in the honeymoon years of their relationship.

They have a secret or two up their sleeves to maintain a loving, happy relationship for such a long period of time, especially when you have such a crazy schedule as most actors and actresses do. Michael Douglas recently opened up about how he has maintained such a happy marriage and it was adorable!

Michael Douglas, probably best known for his role in "Basic Instinct," and "Fatal Attraction," is 74-years-old and says that his marriage has stayed strong because he puts communication and courtesy first. He told US Weekly that those are the two key things he knows he needs to put above all else to keep his marriage to Catherine strong.

He also said he knows that it is easy for people in a relationship to keep resentment under the surface, but it is so important to talk things out with your partner. He says that when talking with Catherine he makes it a point to always be respectful and to truly listen.

When speaking to Access on the red carpet, Michael Douglas also shared that it is often commonplace to take the person closest to you for granted. He mentioned that sometimes people often make a bigger effort with a total stranger than with their partner.

However, he said that he always focuses on remembering how fortunate he is to have Catherine in his life, reminding himself continuously to make a conscious effort to remember every day what an exceptional woman she is.

Michael also mentioned how he and Catherine had an immediate spark from the very second they saw each other across the room. He told the audience at the Paley Center for American Media as cited by the Hollywood Reporter:

 "I looked at her, and I said, 'Catherine, I’m going to be the father of your children,'" Douglas said at the event. "The first time I met her! You think that went over big?"

Today the couple share two children together and they love to travel, but they travel less because they miss their kids so much when they are abroad. Their son, Dylan, is 19-years-old and just left to go to college. Their daughter, Carys Zeta, is 16-years-old.
