Hollywood power-couple Catherine Zeta-Jones, 50, and Michael Douglas, 75, both celebrated milestone birthdays last week. Despite their celebrity status, the pair have decided against having an over-the-top bash, opting for a low-key celebration instead.

In a recent interview, Michael Douglas reflected on his life prior to turning 75 and went in depth on the wisdom he’s obtained throughout the years.

Last Thursday, Douglas attended a luncheon at the Paley Center for Media in NYC that honored the actor's career on television, where he revealed his birthday plans to Page Six with Zeta-Jones.

“This one is a big one, but because we’re in the middle of house moving, our kids are going away to schools and all that, we’re taking a little hiatus,” he told the publication. “We were starting to plan a big bang and then realized it was just overwhelming and we could do it some other time.”

“So we’re going to just be quiet. We have a number of friends who share our same birthday and we’re going to go to one of their parties and hide,” he added.

Speaking to Juju Chang at the Paley Center, Douglas reflected on his life and spoke about the most important lessons he’s learned so far.

"If you’re not careful, you don’t really cherish that moment or that time, and next thing you wake up and it's 50 years later and you go, 'Whoa, what happened?" Douglas said according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The couple’s decision to keep their birthday celebrations low key this year is in line with Douglas’ outlook on life.

“I pace myself,” he told Closer Weekly. “I’m not a surfer, but I admire surfers who sit and do nothing, then suddenly the wave comes and they’re ready.”

Additionally, the 75-year-old said the most important thing he’s learned in life is that ‘kindness is not weakness.’

“I try to conduct myself as a good citizen of the planet and look out for those who are less fortunate,” he told the publication.

The actor had previously been diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer in 2010, but now says his health is ‘good’. “You get checked once a year and just keep moving,” he said. He also went on to express his gratitude for his wife of almost 20 years, Catherine Zeta-Jones.

“Meeting Catherine was extraordinary, and my family has been a really important part of my life,” says Michael. “I’ve been very fortunate.”
