He'll Have to Go is an American country and pop hit recorded on October 15, 1959, by Jim Reeves. The song, released in the fall of 1959, went on to become a hit in both genres early in 1960.

Love songs tend to bring back memories that have long since been filed away in our memories until something calls them up. One such tough-love song is He'll Have to Go. Singer Jim Reeve was a popular Gospel music artist in the 1950s who also had success in Country music before he found his calling. In an old black and white video, the well dressed singer displays an unusually calm demeanor when he tells his love interest that the other man in her life will have to go.

He starts out by telling his little darling to "put your sweet lips to the phone." Right away, it misleadingly seems as though he is going to tell her to give him a little smooch. But, he delivers an unforeseen blow to that expectation.

Direct and straight to the point, he orders her to tell the man with her that it's time for him to go. He never asked her which man she preferred. He just assumed that it was himself.

Many people have had the fortune (or misfortune) of being loved by more than one person simultaneously. Even as we see from Jim's words, this scenario is never really a good thing. As the adage goes, "two's a company: three's a crowd."

Most importantly, Jim's voice, his singing style, his sophisticated style of dress and simple video takes us back to a time when life was simpler. Even the music and video performances were frill-free. There is no technological intervention, so all you get is just great singing with a simple backdrop.

In his song, he reminds us that perfect love is mostly found in romance novels, a fantasy created in the mind of the author. But, love in real life does not work that way. Even in simpler times, love was never simple.

Some people describe relationships as love and war, and "all is fair in love and war." Whether you believe that or not, Jim's extraordinary demand seems to line up with that conclusion.
