Melania Showcases A Patriotic Winter Wonderland At The White House

First Lady Melania Trump recently unveiled the White House's holiday decorations for 2019. The decorations are meant to simulate a winter wonderland, and there is also a sub-theme of patriotism.

Winter wonderland

Melania posted pictures of the decorations on Sunday with the caption "The Spirit of America is shining," as reported here in The Daily Mail.

The decorations include everything you'd expect in a winter wonderland. Fake snow, white lights, dangling snowflake ornaments, a giant Advent calendar, and festive flowers. In addition, there is a strong undercurrent of patriotism: stars and stripes ornaments, a gingerbread White House, and mention of Melania's Be Best campaign by a Scrabble ornament that spells out the name of the campaign.

Honoring the fallen

In addition to the official 18-foot-tall Christmas tree, there is a special tree called the Gold Star Family Tree that honors those who have given their lives serving in the military.

In the pictures of the decorations, Melania is dressed to match her winter wonderland in white. She thanked the many volunteers who had come to help out with the decorations.

The lovely winter wonderland is in stark contrast to the strange red theme that predominated last Christmas. Many people made critical remarks about it being scary and that it reminded them of The Handmaid's Tale or The Shining.

Decorating the White House annually for the holidays is a fairly recent tradition that only really got started in 1961, when First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy began selecting a yearly theme for the decorations placed around the official Christmas tree. Prior to that, inhabitants of the White House tended to only elaborately decorate if there were children in residence or if their family planned to spend the holidays at the White House.
