Hollywood is full of legendary duos and incredible collaborations, one of which is the friendship between Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner. Brooks and Reiner have been friends for 70 years and not even the passage of time has put a dent in their unshakeable bond.
The two first met in the 50s and are now considered pioneers in Jewish-American comedy. Brooks and Reiner came to know each other on Your Show of Shows, a variety program produced by Sid Caesar. Speaking with reporters from The Guardian, Reiner told of how one day, he heard Brooks working on a sketch involving a Jewish pirate and instantly felt a rapport with the soon-to-be legendary comedian.
Both born in New York to second-generation Jewish immigrants, Brooks and Reiner were drawn to comedy as they felt that in those days, it was their only avenue to success. Reiner tells that when they started out, Jewish people were on the bottom rung of society. Continuing, Reiner says that this lowly status made people of their creed naturally funny as they could easily poke fun at people in higher stations.

Having met at work, the two became fast friends in real life. The duo feels that part of their immense chemistry together is that their wives were also friends. Looking around Reiner’s home, it is easy to see how important family and friends are to the venerable funnyman. While one might expect the comedian’s home to be decorated with expensive trinkets, every inch of it is covered in priceless photos of memorable moments. As time hurried on, the two comforted one another when they each lost their beloved wives.

70 years later and Brooks, 93, and Reiner, 97, continue having a remarkable friendship. The duo says that the keys to their great relationship are two things: love and food. Each evening, Brooks drives to Reiner’s home in Beverly Hills and the two eat dinner together while watching Jeopardy! Brooks adds that he can’t think of any better person to spend each evening with than Reiner. In like manner, Reiner says that the world would be bleak without Brooks in his life.
When asked by Guardian reporter Hadley Freeman if they have any secrets to a long life, Reiner says that it is as simple as having something to do each morning. With Brooks in his life, Reiner can be sure that each day will be filled with the comfort of a loving companion.
