Jan 09, 2020 by apost team

On Wednesday evening, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made a bombshell announcement stating they will be stepping back from their senior roles and members of the Royal family.

The shocking news has now set off a series of humorous - as well as harsh - comments on social media by royal fans across the globe.

Taking to their official Instagram account, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex posted a statement Wednesday announcing they “intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and “work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”

The couple added that they will be splitting their time between the Prince’s native United Kingdom and North America and will be announcing the launch of their new charitable entity in the near future.

In response to the announcement, many fans have taken to Twitter, with some even dubbing their departure ‘Megxit’.

"Omg so Harry & Meghan didn't even get permission, they just ghosted!" Camilla Blackett, a TV series writer, tweeted last night.

In direct response to the news, Buckingham Palace made a statement explaining discussions regarding the transition are still in early-stage, stating these are “complicated issues.”

One other twitter user made joked about how celebrities usually quit their jobs to spend time with family, but the Sussexes have switched that around.

Trevor Noah’s the Daily Show also joined in for the fun, posting a ‘job ad’ tailored to the Duke and Duchess.

Since news of the Sussex’s departure broke, the hashtag #megxit started trending on twitter. Although many are able to crack a joke about the news, others have used the hashtag to post harsh comments about Meghan Markle, akin to the harsh manner in which British tabloids have portrayed her in the past.

Booker Prize winner Bernadine Evaristo also took to twitter, condemning such attitudes and telling Markle to “get away from the race hate you've been subjected to in my country."

With the #Megxit now littered with critical and harsh comments targeting the Duchess, one creative twitter user has suggested using a new hashtag in it’s place: #Harryvederci.
