Every so often, the public is treated to an inside view of the private life of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The royal couple stays relatively quiet outside of curated press releases and rare public appearances. So when a photo of their second child, Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, celebrating her first birthday, was released on Instagram, it’s fair to say the attention was substantial. Many congratulated the couple on their beautiful bundle of joy while fans began analyzing her appearance and even what the adorable little girl was wearing.

Prince Harry and Meghan had an adorable start to their relationship. Set up on a blind date in July 2016, the pair hit it off instantly. Harry revealed to Vogue, “I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her. I was like, I’m really going to have to up my game here.”

A few weeks later, Harry was whisking Meghan off to Botswana on a romantic sojourn, according to Town & Country. The couple later described this trip as bringing them together and starting their relationship. The country and their trip would become special to the couple over the years – so special that the center diamond of Meghan's three-stone engagement ring would come from Botswana.

The trip allowed the couple to connect without any social pressure or media scrutiny. “We were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure we had a chance to get to know each other,” Harry said.

Meghan recalled in the same interview how she felt when Harry proposed.

“It was just an amazing surprise. It was so sweet and natural and very romantic; he got on one knee.”

The couple said “I do” in a private ceremony three days before their public wedding on May 19, 2018.

In May 2019, Harry and Meghan welcomed their first child, son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor. A year later, the couple announced they were stepping down from their royal duties in January 2020. They relocated to California just ahead of the global coronavirus pandemic. However, Meghan said the lockdown was a blessing in disguise.

“We moved here during lockdown, exactly when things shut down, so we've just been able to spend a lot of time at home and creating our home,” Meghan told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. “But I think it's just the lifestyle, and the weather is pretty great. But we're just happy.”

After moving to the States, the couple welcomed their second child, Lilibet, on June 4, 2021.

Almost a year later, Harry and Meghan would find themselves back in London for the Platinum Jubilee celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th year as the late reigning monarch. The couple made their first public appearance at a royal event in more than two years on June 3 to attend a Thanksgiving service at St Paul's Cathedral.

Although they were not invited to join the Queen and the rest of the royal family on the Buckingham Palace balcony for her Trooping the Colour parade, the Washington Post reported that glimpses of Meghan playing with some of Elizabeth's great-grandchildren through a window of Buckingham Palace as the parade took place were seen.

Meghan and Harry are private about sharing pictures of their children, but fans were in for a treat after the couple released a photograph of Lilibet at her first birthday bash. Posted by photographer Misan Harriman, the beautiful portrait has won the public's hearts worldwide. Many fawned over Lilibet’s birthday dress.

Even though she is just a baby, Lilibet has been the topic of conversation since before she was even born. The baby girl's name is truly meaningful, as all royal fans would know. Taken from a statement from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, PEOPLE reported:

"Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales."

And while Meghan and Harry are well known for living as privately as possible, they have still given some glimpses into their beautiful home life, including a portrait of Lilibet. The picture of Lilibet captured the hearts of people all over the world.

The post was captioned: "It was such a privilege to celebrate the 1st birthday of Lilibet with my family and hers! Joy and face painting all around ❤️🎂🎉"

Internet users were beyond happy to see an up-close and personal picture of the young princess. The picture on Instagram had over 87,000 likes and many comments.

One kind Instagram user said: "Wow what a beautiful girl Lili is.Thank you for sharing. Absolutely gorgeous. ❤️❤️❤️." Another person commented on the picture and said, "Special memories and I always adore your photos of this family 🎂🎉✨."

The photo featured a beaming Lilibet wearing a baby blue dress with a white bow in her hair. The photo quickly became an internet sensation and spread through many news outlets. Like her brother Archie, Lilibet inherited her father's signature red hair!

But a sad story was soon discovered behind the picture.

In the portrait, Lilibet was seen wearing a pale robin egg blue dress with a white bow in her hair. The dress came in a set that included shorts and a bonnet and is the creation of the ethical brand Isabel Garretón. After photos of Lilibet were released, the company responded:

“What a beautiful surprise and validation of our 30-year mission to uplift and empower women. Thank you @sussexroyal for selecting a woman-owned ethical brand that existed for 30+ years only to uplift other women. It’s a lovely moment to see as we prepare to close our doors and an honor for our designs and hand craft to be a part of Lilibet Diana’s First Birthday at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.”

As mentioned in the response, the brand behind the adorable dress has since closed down after completing the shipping of all its open orders in June 2022. Its founder, who bears the same name, explained that the company was hit hard after the pandemic.

“We entertained offers but decided against selling the brand because it is my name and no interested parties convinced me they would continue the ethical manufacturing approach that has defined who we are,” adding, “The path we took was not easy, it was intense and took many turns. I never gave up or measured the effort, and I loved the work, the people from many places in the world who came into my life, the creative space gifted to me and the beauty in what we did and how we did it.”

While it is a shame to see a brand championing women and ethical business shut down, their hard work will be forever remembered in the cherished memories and charming portraits as that of Lilibet’s.
