Meghan Markle Shares Sweet Words About Her Relationship With The Late Queen Elizabeth II

Sep 09, 2022 by apost team

Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 70-year reign the first week of June 2022, although the true anniversary was back on Feb. 6, 2022. The Platinum Jubilee took place over a four-day bank holiday, where citizens were encouraged to partake in several celebratory events.

The queen was the country's longest-reigning monarch, making the Platinum Jubilee the first-ever in history. This was not only a milestone for her but for the entire world, as she was the first British ruling monarch to reach the seven-decade mark. In fact, she's already made history and is the second longest-serving monarch ever. She's only bested by one other ruler, Louis XIV of France, after she overtook two rulers — Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand and Johann II of Liechtenstein — in 2022. During her time, nothing seemed to be stopping her from carrying out all of her royal duties, no matter what circumstance was thrown her way.

Becoming queen, Queen Elizabeth II defied many odds during her 70-year reign, which sadly came to an end when she passed away on Sept. 8, 2022. She passed away while at her home in Balmoral after Buckingham Palace had earlier announced that she was under medical attention. With reports of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry rushing to be by the queen's side, the whole royal family is deeply heartbroken over their family's gigantic loss.

Originally meeting back in 2017, Meghan and the queen had a unique and lovely relationship. Before passing away in September, the queen was able to meet Meghan and Harry's children, Archie and Lillibet, at her Jubilee. Meghan once shared that she enjoyed being in the queen's company.

According to TIME, Harry flew to Scotland to be with his grandmother, leaving his wife, Meghan Markle, alone and behind in London. PEOPLE reported that he flew alongside his uncles Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

Harry and Meghan had already been in the United Kingdom for a European trip where they would be attending charity events "close to their hearts," according to TIME. It was a surprise that it occurred during the same time that the queen's health was deteriorating. According to TIME, the late monarch was having health issues that kept everyone on high alert as she was being watched over at Balmoral Castle. Earlier in the day, a statement had been released, according to PEOPLE. It said: "Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen's doctors are concerned for Her Majesty's health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable at Balmoral." Tragically, the queen passed away later during the day on Sept. 8, 2022.

Even though Meghan only knew the queen for a few years, she shared that they had a special bond. Speaking with Oprah in 2021, she shared, "The queen has always been wonderful to me. I've loved being in her company." She went on to add, "She's always been warm, welcoming, and inviting." Meghan shared that before meeting the queen, she was nervous; however after spending time together, their relationship grew. "I mean, we had one of our first joint engagements together. She asked me to join her, and I was on the train," Meghan shared.

Meghan shared that there were several moments where the queen reminded her of her own grandmother. "And she has a blanket that sits across her, her knees, for warmth and it was chilly and she was like, 'Meghan, come on.' And put it over my knees as well. And it made me think of my grandmother, where she's always been warm and inviting and really welcoming," she shared with Oprah.

Harry and Meghan were able to spend quality time with the queen when attending her Jubilee in June 2022. The queen even got to meet their daughter, Lillibet, for the first time as well. While visiting the queen, a royal source told Us Weekly that “Harry and Meghan had a wonderful time seeing the queen again. It was one of the biggest highlights of their year so far." The source also shared that the queen also thought her great-grandchildren were nothing short of adorable. "She thinks they’re adorable and gave Lili and Archie gifts," the source shared.

Despite the fact that the royal couple decided to step away from being full-time royal members, the queen was on board with their lifestyle. In 2021 she released a statement and said, "Today, my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family,” she shared. “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family."
