Meghan Markle's Commonwealth Day Look Evokes Princess Diana's Style

In her last official appearance as a senior working royal, Meghan Markle’s bold look resembled a similar style once worn by the late Princess Diana. The Duchess of Sussex, 38, wore an all-green outfit to the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey on Monday. Meghan and her husband Prince Harry attended the event alongside other royals including Queen Elizabeth II, Kate Middleton, Prince William and the Duchess of Cornwall among others.

Meghan paired the emerald-green Emilia Wickstead cape dress with a matching William Chambers fascinator hat, which seemed to take after Princess Diana’s all-green 1982 Trooping the Colour outfit according to Harper's Bazaar. 

The most striking similarity was that they wore nearly identical fascinator hats, which both sported green netting attached to the fascinator’s upper-right side. These tiny but extravagant hats are popular among royals today, and according to Vanity Fair, they may even trace back to Marie Antoinette’s reign in the 1770s.

This isn’t the first time that royals have seemed to make a reference to the past with a return to the classic. According to The Sun, both Meghan and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, have worn pieces from Diana’s private collection.

Even Kate and Meghan's engagement rings includes diamonds from Diana’s private collection—not to mention that the pair has also worn other accessories from the private collection.

But while Meghan often pays homage to Diana’s outfits, especially with her most recent green Commonwealth Day cape dress, Princess Diana’s 1982 outfit differed in one noticeable way. Since Princess Diana was pregnant with Prince William, Diana wore a flowing maternity dress that mostly hid her growing baby bump. 

Though Meghan doesn’t seem to be expecting a child anytime soon, she and Prince Harry are going through a life-changing transition out of their official senior royal roles. That includes a big move to North America along with becoming financially independent of the crown according to Time.
