This week, seventy-two MPs of the British Parliament from across the political spectrum have put their differences aside to come together and sign an open letter directed to Meghan Markle.

The letter expressed the parliamentarians' solidarity towards the Duchess and condemned what they described as "outdated, colonial undertones" expressed by British tabloids, which have until now treated Meghan with merciless sctrutiny.

The letter opened with the expression of solidarity of the MPs with the Duchess, commencing her action in taking a stance against the “often distasteful and misleading nature” of the stories written about her and her family by British tabloids.

“On occasions, stories and headlines have represented an invasion of your privacy and have sought to cast aspersions about your character, without any good reason as far as we can see,” the letter reads.

"Even more concerning still, we are calling out what can only be described as outdated, colonial undertones to some of these stories," the letter continued.

The MPs also drawed conclusions to the scrutiny they too, as female public figures, they come under.

“Although we find ourselves being women in public life in a very different way to you,” they wrote, “we share an understanding of the abuse and intimidation which is now so often used as a means of disparaging women in the public office from getting on with very important work."

In response to the letter, the Duchess personally called Labour MP Holly Lynch, who spearheaded the campaign, to thank her and her peers for their support.

“She was calling to thank myself and other women MP for standing with her and sending the open letter to say that we, as women in public office, absolutely understand what she is going through,” Lynch told the Daily Mail

On October 1, the Duchess of Sussex launched legal action against UK based media Associated Newspapers, citing the “misuse of private information, infringement of copyright and breach of the Data Protection Act 2018” as their claims against the publishers.

Her husband the Duke of Sussex immediately released a statement towards the public condemning the “ruthless campaign” against his wife by the British tabloid press, drawing comparisons to his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales.
