The long-running TV trivia show “Jeopardy!” has a simple format that has kept audiences captivated for years while they answer along at home in their living rooms; it is certainly a TV mainstay for its comfortable consistency, but who knew that there would be so much excitement over the contestants themselves. Recently, fans have been rooting for contestant James Holzhauer who has been on a very long-running winning streak.
Holzhauer has been steadily creeping up on all-time champ Ken Jennings’ record over the last 33 games. Jennings won $2,520,700 over 74 games in 2004 while Holzhauer won $2,464,216 this year reports ESPN. However, Holzhauer’s winning streak ended on Monday when his championship was toppled by a contestant named Emma Boettcher.
In the episode, the competition rested on Final Jeopardy when all three contestants got the answer correct but it was her strategic wager that brought her to her win. So who is this rookie who uprooted a champ?

Boettcher is a 27-year-old librarian from Chicago, reports NBC News. She works at the University of Chicago as a user experience resident librarian, which means she helps people find new avenues to find the information they wish to find.
On air, Boettcher talks about her master’s paper for which she won the Elfreda Chatman Research Award. The show’s superfan reveals that it was actually based on questions on “Jeopardy!” and she analyzed the difficulty of each question. It had a clever title, called, “What is Difficulty?: Estimating the Difficulty of Fact-Finding Questions Using the ‘Jeopardy’ Archive."
It’s a big day for librarians and perhaps the University of Chicago will make an exception to their quiet rule. Her coworkers are totally supportive:
“We're all going to be jumping around for the rest of the day,” overjoyed librarian Kafi-Ayanna Allah told NBC News. "She was great, I knew she was destined for great things, just (didn't expect it to be on) TV.”
Congratulations to Emma Boettcher, we will be watching to see if you beat Holzhauer and perhaps Jennings too!
