Meet Downton Abbey Actor Dame Maggie Smith's Family—And Viewers May Recognize Her Sons

Starring in Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, and several other iconic films, Dame Maggie Smith is a well-known screen legend. Her roles have earned her accolades from the entertainment industry and the Queen alike. Now, her sons step into her legendary shoes, as it seems they've both got the acting bug from their famous mother.

Dame Maggie Smith started her legendary acting career at the 1952 Oxford Playhouse playing Viola in Twelfth Night. Now, more than half a century later, the far-reaching actress has starred in and won awards for films, TV shows, and plays. The 85-year-old is one of few who can boast receiving the "Triple Crown" of acting, which is an Academy Award, Emmy, and Tony.

In addition to entertainment awards, Dame Maggie Smith has also been honored by Queen Elizabeth II, who named her a Dame in 1990 in recognition of her contributions to drama.

Everyone has a role in which they know Dame Maggie Smith. Recent fans may well know her as Lady Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey. She also served in the original Clash of Titans, as goddess Hera. Another one of her legendary roles is as Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter franchise.

Her eldest son, Chris, chose the surname Larkin over his given name of Stephens to remove family preference. Larkin was chosen based on his favorite poet Philip Larkin. Classically trained, Chris first had small TV roles. Now, he is arguably most well known for his role as Herman Goring in the 2003 film Hilter: The Rise of Evil. He has also starred alongside several of Hollywood's biggest names, like Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe.

Her youngest son, Toby, is compelled, like his family to the performing arts. Most notably, he starred as the James Bond villain, Gustav Graves, in the franchise's 2003 film Die Another Day. He reprised the role in the 2012 video game 007 Legends, lending his voice and likeness.

Dame Maggie Smith's acting career spans over fifty years and has given her a Triple Crown and a royal title. A part of such iconic franchises like Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, it is no wonder she is so well known and beloved. Her two sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens have followed in her footsteps, creating acting names for themselves.
