Meet Bill Murray’s 6 Sons — One Is A Celebrated Chef & Another A Rising Basketball Star

Most people know Bill Murray as the deadpan comedy legend behind “Ghostbusters,“ “Groundhog Day,“ and a career full of iconic roles. But away from the cameras, Bill is a father of six sons — and the story of how he raised them, and what they’ve each gone on to do, is just as interesting as anything he’s ever put on screen.

Bill welcomed his two oldest sons, Homer, 44, and Luke Murray, 40, with his first wife, Margaret Kelly, during their marriage from 1981 to 1996. He later married costume designer Jennifer Butler, whom he met on the set of “Scrooged,“ and together they welcomed four more sons — Caleb, Jackson, Cooper and Lincoln Murray — before their divorce in 2008.

The split wasn’t easy. But Bill has said it ultimately brought him closer to his boys. “As much as the divorce was very hard, the fallout of it has been really great. I ended up much closer to my guys than I ever would have been,” he told Esquire in 2012.

Of his six sons, Homer and Luke have carved out the most public profiles. Homer, 44, is a chef and restaurateur in New York City, co-owning the eatery 21 Greenpoint. Bill has made no secret of how proud he is of his eldest. A quote on the restaurant’s website captured it perfectly:

“Homer has taken the joy of the family to have a drink, have a meal, and have friends together in one place, and made it his life's work.”

Then there’s Bill's second son, Luke, who has built a name for himself entirely on his own terms — in the world of college basketball. Luke once served as an assistant coach at the University of Connecticut, where he helped the Huskies win the NCAA Men's Championship in April 2023. Bill was in the stands that night and told reporters afterward:

“I’m very proud of this boy, he’s a wonderful kid, and he’s worked very hard.”

In March 2026, Luke was named head coach of Boston College’s men's basketball team — a major milestone that had his father beaming all over again.

“In Luke Murray, we have found a leader who does not just understand the modern landscape of college basketball — he has helped define it,” the college's athletic director, Blake James, said in a statement.

As for Bill’s four younger sons with Butler — Caleb, 33, Jackson, 30, Cooper, 29, and Lincoln, 20 — they have largely chosen to stay out of the spotlight. Cooper is the exception, having appeared alongside his father in “Moonrise Kingdom“ in 2012 and in four episodes of the Farrelly brothers’ TV series “The Now“ in 2021.

Bill has always been intentional about how he parents — honest, funny, and deeply grounded. When his kids once asked what he wanted for his birthday or Christmas, he gave them the same answer his own father had given him.

“Peace and quiet,” he told Esquire. “All I want is you at your best — you making this an easier home to live in, you thinking of others.”

From a messy divorce to six sons finding their own paths, it turns out Bill’s greatest role has been the one nobody sees.
