Medics Rush To Revive Dog Saved From Fire, Special Pet Oxygen Mask Saves His Life

Many people enjoy answering the following hypothetical question. If you could only grab one thing from a burning home, what would it be?

There is something very honest and telling about this question. Fortunately, very few people have to play out this scenario in real life.

A vast majority of parents would think of saving their children first. Other people may mention an item of inherent value such as jewelry or electronic device. Some others would save something of sentimental value such as pictures, family records or documents. Still, there is another group of people who would always save their pets.

As reported by KVUE, one family in Austin, Texas had the unfortunate opportunity to put this question into practice. The family's home caught on fire and everyone made it outside safely. In fact, the entire family was outside before the emergency responders arrived.

Firefighters responded to a call about a house fire where although the family had made it out, their dog was still inside.

The Travis County Fire Rescue and Austin Fire Department were able to save the dog from the burning house. Their specialized crew had pet oxygen masks specifically designed for these situations.

The dog was revived back to health with this machine. The family was waiting anxiously outside as the firefighters scanned the house for their pet. Fortunately, Audrey the dog was able to survive thanks to several rescue personnel who carried these oxygen masks.

When the firefighters found Audrey, she was barely breathing because of the heavy smoke in the house. The firefighters never left her side as they helped her out of the burning home.

If it weren't for the perfect fit of the pet oxygen mask, the dog wouldn't have survived. Not every fire department is equipped with these masks. Many independent organizations and groups donate these masks to fire departments because they have proven to be effective in saving the lives of animals.

Firefighters went back in to search the area and paramedic Peter Riefel later told KVUE,

“They did a clean sweep of the house and they weren’t coming out until they found that animal.”

Audrey coughed up some carbon mucus after being revived. Other than suffering the shock of the situation, the dog turned out to be perfectly fine after the rescue. According to the rescuers, Audrey was running, jumping and playing within a few minutes of being revived.

Thanks to the two fire departments, the entire family made it safely out of the house. The firefighters were also able to put the fire out before too much damage was done to the house.
