Matthew McConaughey Still Gifts Handwritten Love Poems To His Wife Even After 17 Years Together

Matthew McConaughey has been an icon in the movie industry since the early 1990s. While he has starred in a plethora of films in many different genres, he is most known for his roles as the romantic lead in big Hollywood movies. With his smooth charm and plenty of shirtless scenes, it’s not hard to see why McConaughey has been tabbed as the go-to guy for romantic comedies.

But that's acting, after all. Many actors are nothing like their on-screen personas. However, it might be a surprise to learn that the actor is actually kind of a romantic in real life too. His marriage with Camila Alves seems to be one that is based on true love and McConaughey knows how to make sure his wife feels special.

The couple, who met in 2006, were in love from the first moment they laid eyes on each other, E! reported. McConaughey said that he was so stricken with Alves that he felt she was an other-worldly being. She possessed qualities that he didn't completely understand, and they made a big impression on him. He described her as graceful, beautiful and possessing a strong sense of identity.

After they began to date, the couple welcomed their first child into the world in 2008, a boy named Levi. They had a daughter named Vida in 2010 and became engaged in Dec. 2011. In 2012, they wed in June before their second son Livingston was born in December of that year. Now, the couple has been together for 17 years and they're still as in love as the day they met.  

Back in 2012, Alves said to People Magazine that she was not the type of girl in childhood who dreamed of marriage. She even told her parents that she might never get married. She didn't realize how important her wedding to McConaughey would feel to her until the day actually came. She became enraptured in the emotion of the event. Meanwhile, McConaughey told Playboy Magazine, as reported by People that he is faithful to his wife to a point that is selfish. He believes he is under a spell around her, and he wants to remain that way. 

The actor claimed that his way of maintaining the romance in his marriage is due to a low-key approach, and he doesn't like to buy extravagant gifts for his wife. He told Today in 2018:

"I don’t have a certain thing I buy her. An earnest handwritten note, that she knows I sat down and took some time and has some poetry to it, that’s worth more than whatever retail I paid for something."

Sounds like something right out of a rom-com. It's no wonder McConaughey knows the way to a woman's heart both on-screen and off! He also talked about parenthood in the same interview and his approach to that. 

The couple got married in Austin, Texas in 2012, six years after they began dating each other. Alves was pregnant with Livingston at the time and looked absolutely glowing. Now, Alves and McConaughey are proud parents of three kids aged between 9 and 13, and they're absolutely enthralled in parenthood.

The couple makes sure that they're able to spend adequate time with their children. They suspend their curfew on Friday nights, and the kids are treated to movies and pizza that they are allowed to enjoy all night if they please. Alves reported that the Friday night festivities often become a dance party that goes late until the early morning. McConaughey revealed that he has a particular liking for swing music.

The kids are also allowed to sleep in their parents' bed on this special night of the week. McConaughey admitted that the kids are often up until 2 a.m. on Fridays, and there is usually cooking and music for the family festivities. When it comes to disciplining their kids, the couple is able to mix steadfast rules into the laid-back feeling that McConaughey is famous for. He said to People that he is grateful to have three healthy children, and they are very strong in their individuality, which is likely attributed to their hereditary link to Alves.

McConaughey has said that he and his wife blend different styles of parenting, but they have similar moral values. From watching his kids grow up, McConaughey believes that the moral characteristics of people seem to be primarily inherited. McConaughey believes that the role of discipline and moral guidance in parenting can only go so far. A child's innate sense of morality will always be at the core of who they are. 

During his appearance on Today, McConaughey added:

“Certain times, they need a buddy. At the same time, I’m 48. If I don’t know better, what’s evolution for?”
