Matthew McConaughey Is Completely Devoted To Wife Camila Alves And Knows Exactly How To Spoil Her

Matthew McConaughey is known for being a well-versed actor in the entertainment industry, specifically for his roles as the romantic lead in various romantic comedies. While it's clear that McConaughey is able to capture the heart of anyone in any of the romantic comedies he's starred in, fans may be surprised to know that the actor is just as romantic in real life.

The actor's charming personality has helped him not only win over the hearts of fans from all over the world but also the heart of one very important woman to him: his wife, Camila Alves. McConaughey met Alves back in 2006, and the pair have gone on to have a beautiful life together. 

E! News reported that McConaughey was so stricken with Alves when he first met her that he felt she was an other-worldly being. She possessed qualities that he didn't completely understand, and they made a big impression on him. He described her as graceful, beautiful and possessing a strong sense of identity.

The couple found love after they first met and went on to build a long-lasting relationship together. The couple got engaged on Dec. 25, 2011, and were later married in a private ceremony on June 9, 2012, in Austin, Texas, where they continue to reside. Together they have three children: a son named Levi who was born in 2008, a daughter named Vida, born in 2010 and another son named Livingston, born in 2012.

While it's clear that someone of McConaughey's caliber could most likely buy anything he wants for his loved ones, the actor is a fan of more intimate and personal gifts for his gorgeous wife. Rather than buy Alves extravagant or expensive gifts, such as bouquets of flowers and diamond jewelry, McConaughey has proven he is more of a true romantic at heart. While McConaughey is known for being romantic in many films, he has made sure to bring that approach to his real-life marriage with Brazilian model and designer Alves. When it comes to talking about his wife, McConaughey seems to have no shortage of compliments. Time and again, McConaughey has made sure to speak highly of his wife and their relationship, and it's clear that the love goes both ways.

Surprisingly, the couple first met at a nightclub in Los Angeles, despite the fact that McConaughey has said he's "not a club guy." The actor was there with his buddy Lance Armstrong. First, McConaughey and Alves had an interaction at the bar and she had no idea who he was since the actor had a long beard and was wearing a rasta hat.

But later when he properly spotted Alves across the room, he knew it was something special. E! News reported that he instantly said, "What is that?" The actor then admitted, "'That' went and sat down and I tried to get 'That's' attention." He asked her to join his group for a drink and later in the evening offered her his guest bedroom for the night after she was about to call a cab. He said:

"I did sneak down to the guest bedroom twice that night and got booted out."

But it was the next morning that impressed him the most. After he woke up and went to the kitchen, he heard laughter, "the kind of laughter of people that hang out a lot." Not only was Alves totally comfortable with his friends and the housekeeper but she was joking with them "like they'd been buddies for 10 years." He added:

"That's a woman who knows herself ... That's a woman who's comfortable."

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Alves spoke with People in 2012 and gave some insights into her relationship with McConaughey. Surprisingly, she never saw herself getting married but has grown to enjoy every moment with her family.

"The main thing for me is to make sure our home is peaceful, that it's healthy, that the kids are good," Alves said. "I didn't know how important (the wedding) was, and how really truly special it was, until I went through the ceremony."

Fortunately, that household dynamic Alves was longing for seems to be a reality for the family, as both parents have found a great balance of caring for each other and their children. They also have a lot of fun together — on Fridays, the kids are allowed to stay awake until the late hours of the night. However, they still know right from wrong thanks to McConaughey's ability to mix steadfast rules into the laid-back feeling that he is famous for.

On the family's fun Friday nights, they spend time together and the kids are treated to movies and pizza, which they are allowed to enjoy all night if they please. Alves has said that the Friday night festivities often become a dance party that goes on late until the early morning, while McConaughey revealed that he has a particular liking for swing music. What's more, the kids are also allowed to sleep in their parents' bed on this special night of the week. McConaughey told People that he is grateful to have three healthy children who are all very strong in their individuality. 

McConaughey added to People that he and his wife blend different styles of parenting, but they have similar moral values. He said:

"The main thing is that my wife and I, Camila, we have a similar moral bottom line. And as you learn, if you have kids, every day they get older, you realize how much more it’s really DNA. We can nudge ’em and shepherd ’em, et cetera et cetera, but they are who they are." 

Clearly, McConaughey and Alves are one happy family together. In fact, the actor is so in love with his wife that he once told Playboy Magazine that he is faithful to a point that is selfish. He believes he is under a spell around her, and he wants to remain that way. In the past, he spoke about how he finds her sexy in many different ways. He told E! News:

"There are ways she is sexy as a woman. There are ways she is sexy as a human. There are ways she is sexy as a mother. There's many angles. I will say that."

It's no wonder then that McConaughey isn't afraid to show off his romantic side with Alves. In an interview with Today, he talked about his approach to maintaining the romance in his marriage and he said it was due to being low-key, for example, he doesn't like to buy extravagant gifts for his wife. He told the news outlet:

"I don’t have a certain thing I buy her. An earnest handwritten note, that she knows I sat down and took some time and has some poetry to it, that’s worth more than whatever retail I paid for something."
