Matthew McConaughey has been an icon in the movie industry since the early 1990s. While he has starred in a plethora of films in many different genres, he is most known for his roles as the romantic lead in big Hollywood movies. “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” and “The Wedding Planner,” are just two of his iconic romance movies. With his smooth charm and plenty of shirtless scenes, it’s not hard to see why McConaughey has been tabbed as the go-to guy for romantic comedies.
But that's acting, after all. Many actors are nothing like their on-screen personas. However, it might be a surprise to learn that the actor is actually kind of a romantic in real life too. His marriage with Camila Alves seems to be one that is based on true love and McConaughey knows how to make sure his wife feels special.
The couple, who met in 2006, were in love from the first moment they laid eyes on each other, E! reported. McConaughey said that he was so stricken with Alves that he felt she was an other-worldly being. She possessed qualities that he didn't completely understand, and they made a big impression on him. He described her as graceful, beautiful, and possessing strong confidence in her identity.
After the two eventually began to date, the couple welcomed their first child into the world in 2008, a boy named Levi. They had a daughter named Vida in 2010 and became engaged in Dec. 2011. In 2012, they wed in June before their second son Livingston was born in December of that year. Although the celebrity couple lives a wealthy and famous life, both McConaughey and Alves come from humble beginnings and still appreciate their upbringings.

McConaughey grew up in Uvalde and Longview, Texas. He has two older brothers and his parents married and divorced each other three times. In an exclusive interview with Today 2020, he revealed that his childhood wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows.
"I don't raise my children the same way my parents raised me ... but I don't dare judge how my parents did it because every single time I got in trouble or got the belt or whatever, I earned it," the award-winning star said. In 2020 McConaughey released his book “Greenlights,” which gave greater detail into his Texas upbringing.
“Mom and Dad had been trying to make a baby for years to no avail, so Mom thought I was a tumor until the fifth month of pregnancy. Dad went to the bar instead of the hospital the day I was born, because he suspected I wasn’t his anyway. But I was,” McConaughey wrote in his book. Despite his childhood, the star has not let his childhood deter him from going after what he wants. “I’ve never felt like a victim. I have a lot of proof that the world is conspiring to make me happy,” he also wrote.
McConaughey’s wife, Alves also comes from humble beginnings. The model and author was born and raised in Brazil until she was 15. After having the opportunity to take a trip to Los Angeles with her aunt, the young girl decided to stay. Alves's next move sounds like the plot of a movie. She spent the next four years paying her bills as a house cleaner and learning English. At the age of 19, Alves moved to New York to pursue modeling and design. Much like McConaughey, Alves created her own journey and worked hard to put herself into her life of success.

The couple has been married for over 10 years. The couple has taken their humble beginnings and been extremely generous with their success. The Hollywood A-listers have dedicated their philanthropic efforts with their foundation called “Just Keep Livin.’” The foundation aims to work with school students by providing them with life tools for their future.
In an interview with Town & Country in 2020, McConaughey said they are providing everything they can. “That’s a very basic need we didn’t even think of,” he said. “We’re actually offering a lot of kids a safe place to be.”
One young woman who attended the couple's foundation and program, Maria Gutierrez Salmeron, said JKL changed her life.
“What makes the program unique is how all students are welcomed. You are not your GPA, you are not your trauma, you are not your insecurities or your home life,” Salmeron said. “Just Keep Livin’ gives you the chance to just be you.”
Aside from working, running a foundation, being parents, and being spouses, Alves and McConaughey are also popular in the press and headlines. In May and June of 2022, McConaughey and Alves were invited to the White House to speak. The star actor made headlines and possibly history by delivering an important speech about a tragedy in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas.
The speech received a lot of positive and inspirational feedback all over the world. McConaughey and Alves reside in Texas with their three children. You can keep up with Alves by following her Instagram page. You can also follow her husband by following his Instagram page.
