Matthew McConaughey and Wife Camila Meet Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican

On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila Alves McConaughey attended Pope Leo XIV's weekly general audience at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City — and when the pontiff made his way through the church to greet attendants after the service, he stopped when he reached the McConaugheys.

Pope Leo XIV — born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, Illinois, elected as pope in May 2025 — shook the couple's hands, posed for a photograph, and exchanged a brief greeting with McConaughey in the aisle. The moment was captured on video by The Associated Press and shared widely. McConaughey can be seen leaning in warmly, speaking quietly with the pontiff, before Leo moved on to greet others.

The visit was not arranged as a formal private audience. McConaughey and Alves attended as members of the public — joining the thousands of pilgrims who attend the pope's weekly general audiences each week. The encounter with the pope appeared spontaneous, as Leo made his customary post-audience walk through the crowd.

McConaughey, born Nov. 4, 1969, has been open about his Christian faith throughout his career. "I go to church once a week," he told Relevant Magazine.

"I go, I pray and I do inventory. I take a deep breath, understand myself as me being number two in God's house, and go back through my week."

He has spoken widely about his faith as a guiding force in his life — describing God as a central presence in his decision-making and his sense of purpose.

Alves, born Jan. 28, 1982, in Ituiutaba, Brazil, became a U.S. citizen in 2015. The couple have been married since June 2012 and share three children: Levi, 17, Vida, 16, and Livingston, 13.

The Vatican encounter arrived at a notable moment in McConaughey's public life. He has been increasingly visible in conversations about national unity, civic life, and faith-based values — co-hosting the "Disagree Better" initiative alongside governors from across the political spectrum, and speaking regularly about what he sees as the need for Americans to find common ground. A meeting with a pope who has spoken repeatedly about dialogue, compassion, and bridging divisions carried its own symbolic weight.

Pope Leo XIV is the first American-born pope in the history of the Catholic Church. His election in May 2025, following the death of Pope Francis, was met with an outpouring of response in the United States — where his Chicago roots, his years as a missionary in Peru, and his reputation as a theological moderate made him a figure of particular fascination. He has spoken about the importance of listening across difference — a message consistent with McConaughey's own public positioning.

The photograph taken inside St. Peter's — McConaughey and Alves standing alongside Leo XIV in one of the most famous spaces in the world — circulated widely and generated a warm response online. Comments described the encounter as "surreal," "beautiful," and "so McConaughey."

McConaughey and Alves met at a Los Angeles nightclub in 2006. He has described seeing her cross the room and thinking: "What is that?" They have been together for 20 years. In the Basilica of St. Peter, under the dome Michelangelo designed, they met the pope.

"We have a love that we never question,"

McConaughey has said of his marriage. The Vatican, it appears, approved.
