Matt Damon Goes on His First Date in 23 Years — With a Pit Bull Named Betsy Who Has Been Waiting 18 Months for a Home

Matt Damon has been married to Luciana Damon since December 2005. In more than 20 years together, he has — by his own joking admission — been on exactly zero dates. That changed on June 5, 2026.

"This is the first date my wife has allowed me to go on in 23 years," Damon said in a video posted to Instagram by Eastwood Ranch Foundation, a rescue operation in Agoura Hills, California, founded by Alison Eastwood — the daughter of Clint Eastwood. He was there as part of The Dodo's "Dream Date" series, which pairs celebrities with shelter animals in need of adoption. His date was Betsy, a people-loving, toy-obsessed pit bull who had been waiting at the rescue for over a year and a half.

"The real reason was that Betsy's been here the longest," Damon explained. "She's been here for a year and a half. And while this is a great place for a dog, it's not a permanent place for a dog." He arrived for the occasion with a plush bouquet, a red bandana, and full commitment to the bit.

Eastwood Ranch, which Damon described as rescuing dogs "from kill shelters — so this is kind of their last hope," has been operating since Alison Eastwood founded it with a mission to save animals from overcrowded high-kill shelters. On the day Damon visited, adoption fees at participating California shelters had been waived as part of the state's Adopt-A-Pet Day initiative.

Betsy had been waiting 18 months for someone to notice her. On June 5, 2026, someone very famous finally did.

The video, shared to Instagram by Eastwood Ranch Foundation and co-produced with The Dodo, showed Damon spending the afternoon getting to know several dogs at the facility. He met Jojo, an endlessly playful puppy. He met Piper, a four-year-old dog who is blind and partially deaf but full of love. He met Duke, a Doberman with a serious love of toys. And then he spent time with Betsy.

Alison Eastwood explained during the visit that Betsy is "great with people" and children but tends to be shy around other dogs — a personality trait, not a dealbreaker. Damon listened and then gave Betsy the kind of undivided attention she had apparently been waiting a year and a half for. She was, by every account in the video, delighted.

Damon, born Oct. 8, 1970, owns multiple rescue pets and has long supported animal welfare causes. The decision to take part in The Dodo's "Dream Date" series was consistent with a public persona that tends toward genuine rather than performative. He made the case for Betsy plainly: she deserves a home, she has been waiting too long, and someone out there should choose her.

Whether or not a family came forward after the video aired, the attention it generated was immediate. "So Betsy was my date today," Damon said at the end of the visit, giving her one last scratch behind the ears. Twenty-three years without a date. Not a bad way to break the streak.
