Mariah Carey is a legendary singer-songwriter, record producer and actress. She is known for her signature use of the whistle register, melismatic singing style, and impressive five-octave vocal range. She rose to fame in 1990 with her self-titled debut album. Carey has achieved many accolades and awards, including being the first artist in history to have her first five singles reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The songs were "Hero," "Without You," "All I want for Christmas is You," "Fantasy," and "Always Be My Baby."

Carey released her debut album under the guidance of Tommy Motolla, a Columbia Records executive who she would later marry and then separate from. While signed to Columbia Records, Carey released some of her most popular albums, including her famous Christmas album in 1994 titled "Merry Christmas." The album is still beloved by audiences and regains popularity every year around the holiday season.

After her separation from Mottola, Carey underwent a self-transformation and added more hip-hop elements to her music, beginning with her sixth album, "Butterfly." Carey left Columbia Records in 2001. Billboard has named her the most successful artist of the 1990s, and the World Music Awards also recognized her as the best-selling artist of the 1990s and the best-selling pop-female artist of the millennium.

Carey has been through many transformations in both her career and personal life, including relationship troubles with her parents and former partners. However, Carey has proven to be a very devoted and loving mother to her pair of fraternal twins. Read on to find out more about Carey’s life and relationships.

Carey was born on Mar. 27, 1969, in Huntington, New York. She is the youngest of three children born to Patricia Hickey, a former opera singer and vocal coach. Her father, Alfred Roy Carey, was an aeronautical engineer. Carey's parents split up when she was 3, which is something she has previously opened up about. In her memoir "The Meaning of Mariah Carey," she spoke about the difficulties of growing up with divorced parents and described her childhood as violent and challenging. Fortunately, she has always been able to find an escape through music.

Carey has always been known for being a bit nocturnal, often staying up all night to work. In an interview with The Guardian, she opened up about her childhood and its effects on her life. "I think my staying up all night started from having such a dysfunctional family. Oftentimes, whoever was in the house was doing whatever it was that they were doing, and that felt kinda unsafe to me, so I started staying up," Carey said.

She has been known as the Queen of Christmas since the release of her album "Merry Christmas" in 1994. Carey said her passion for the holiday comes from not having had much to enjoy during Christmas as a child. She said her motivation behind the hit single "All I Want for Christmas is You" was "to write a song that would make me feel like a carefree young girl at Christmas." While many of Carey’s other holiday songs are loved by fans, none quite compare to the virality of “All I Want for Christmas is You.”

During her time at school, Carey excelled in music and literature. She graduated from Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, in 1987. While attending, she first began writing poetry and song lyrics. However, the hopeful star ended up missing school often due to her work as a demo singer. This job helped her make connections with other artists, who would then help her produce her own demo tape.

It’s hard to believe that Carey wasn’t always the star she is today, but she had a strong drive and clear ambition for her craft early on. With such a beautiful voice and gift for singing, it’s not surprising to see that Carey has since become recognized as one of the best singers of her generation. Her impressive range and whistle tone are her staples – traits that fans absolutely adore the star for.

She has released plenty of hits over the years, with many of her chart successes occurring during the 1990s and 2000s. Some of her most notable songs include “Hero,” “Without You,” “Fantasy,” “Always Be My Baby” and “One Sweet Day.” Another popular song of hers is “We Belong Together.” Actor Eric Roberts even appeared in the music video for the song in 2004!

On top of that, Carey has also appeared in several films. Some of the ones she is most known for include “The Butler,” “A Christmas Melody,” “The Lego Batman Movie” and “Precious.” The latter earned her the Breakthrough Actress Performance award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Carey was also a judge on “American Idol.”

While Carey proved to have great talent from a young age, that doesn’t mean that everything came very easily to her. In fact, she encountered hardships in her relationship with her mother. Carey recalled a moment from when she was still a teen, and her mom screamed that she would never have as much talent as her. According to PEOPLE, she said:

"There was a distinct shift: she made me feel like the competition, like a threat. In place of our previous bond grew a different tie, a rope tethering us through shared biology and social obligation. Having people you love be jealous of you professionally comes with the territory of success, but when the person is your mother and the jealousy is revealed at such a tender age, it's particularly painful."

Reflecting on the past has given Carey some clarity on who her mother really is. She shared, "It has taken me a lifetime to find the courage to confront the stark duality of my mother, the beauty and the beast that coexist in one person — and to discover there's beauty in all of us, but who loved you and how they loved you will determine how long it takes to realize it."

To protect herself, Carey created distinct boundaries with her family. "For my sanity and peace of mind, my therapist encouraged me to literally rename and reframe my family. My mother became Pat to me, Morgan my ex-brother and Alison my ex-sister ... I had to stop expecting them to one day miraculously become the mommy, big brother and big sister I fantasized about," she explained.

Carey added:

"I had to stop making myself available to be hurt by them. It has been helpful…The situation with Pat, on the other hand, is more complicated. I have reserved some room in my heart and life to hold her — but with boundaries. Creating boundaries with the woman who gave birth to me is not easy — it is a work in progress."

Carey has certainly been very open about her relationships and encounters with notable people over the years. But what many people may not know is that the singer once had a connection with the late Princess Diana.

During her life, Diana received plenty of criticism from media outlets and was followed incessantly due to her status as a royal. Carey is a celebrity who is no stranger to the spotlight and has gotten used to the paparazzi following her, especially after her divorces and rumors about her diva behavior circulated. At one point in her career, Carey had a brief encounter with Diana and felt connected to her based on their experiences with the press.

Diana had been trying to escape the paparazzi in Paris the night of her death, according to Showbiz CheatSheet. Unfortunately, the Princess of Wales passed away on Aug. 31, 1997, following a tragic car accident.

It was a moment that left the world feeling heartbroken, and people from all over grieved the loss of the princess. In Carey’s 2020 memoir “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” the singer called Diana’s passing a “death by tabloid,” according to Showbiz CheatSheet.

Carey is another popular figure who has been in the public eye since the late 1990s and went through some situations similar to Diana. She has been through two public divorces over the course of her career.

Carey’s first marriage was to Tommy Mottola, a Columbia Records executive. They were married from 1993 to 1998. “Back then, you did one thing, and it dominated the press for what seemed like an eternity,” Carey said. The singer later went on to date actor and comedian Nick Cannon, whom she had two children with. The two tied the knot in 2008 but announced their separation in 2014. Their divorce was finalized in 2016.

As someone who was hurt by the constant negative press, Carey looked for ways to move forward and began turning to Diana as an example, according to Showbiz CheatSheet. “I studied how the press hounded her like hyenas,” she explained. Carey also had a brief encounter with the princess – something that has stayed with her ever since.

Carey recalled:

“I once had a brief but unforgettable moment with Lady Di when our eyes locked at a Vogue party. She was in a stunning sapphire-colored gown, neck dripping in the same blue gems. And she had that look – the dull terror of never being left alone burning behind her eyes. We were both like cornered animals in couture.”

It was a moment that left Carey feeling connected to Diana. “I completely recognized and identified with her,” she explained. “We shared that understanding of how it felt always being surrounded by people, all of whom might now be trying to hurt you, but all of whom are trying to do something. They all want something. I didn’t know she would be caught and killed shortly after our encounter.”

Carey has proven that she has a real heart of gold despite her, at times, poor reputation. But what is certain is the fact that the notable star has a soft spot for her two children: fraternal twins Moroccan and Monroe. The kids were born on Apr. 30, 2011, and are now 11 years old.

Carey often shares photographs and videos of her kids on social media, showing the world what a cute family they are! For Moroccan and Monroe’s 11th birthday, Carey uploaded a photo of them more recently and one of them from when they were just babies on her Instagram. She captioned the post, “Happy 11th birthday to the two greatest blessings of my life. Roc and Roe…Always be my babies! …DEMKIDS!!!! I LOVE YOU FOREVER! Mommy ❤️”

And on Sept. 5, 2022, the singer posted another sweet photo of herself alongside her set of twins during their time at the amusement park Cedar Point. “Had the best time at @cedarpoint! Never again with the heels though!” Carey wrote.

Despite their young age, they have already seen quite a bit in their short life. Starting off 2021, Moroccan shared some of his thoughts that he learned during 2020 in a video uploaded by his mother. Carey wrote, “Words of wisdom from Rocky for the new!” Moroccan had said:

“A lot of people might’ve not thought that this year was perfect but this year was inspiring to me… ‘Cause I had it too good for too long, man. And I just was like ‘Ah, this is so good,’ and I needed a jumpstart.”

The young one added, “But still, we gotta think good, positive and nothing will bring us down, no matter what.”

It’s amazing to see someone so young have such a bright outlook on the future. Unfortunately, Moroccan’s life has not always been sunshine and rainbows, as PEOPLE reported that he was bullied. Carey shared, “Rocky just got bullied the other day by a white supremacist person that he thought was his friend. It’s like, insane. This is the world we live in.”

The singer – who is biracial – also said that she read her memoir to her children, especially the chapters that touched on race. “I’m reading chapters to them that are helping to illustrate my encounters with racism, and how they can have a greater understanding, and ultimately a greater reservoir with which to deal with the situation itself,” Carey said.

According to METRO, Carey explained that she became aware of racial issues when she was very young as “it became a subject of humiliation for (her), as a child.” This is just part of the reason why she allowed her children to hear specific parts of her book. She showed her daughter a section that detailed a run-in with a group of girls Carey thought were friends but ended up bullying her.

“I let her hear that,” Carey said. “And it was really sweet, she goes, ‘Mommy, those girls, they feel so bad now. I bet they wish they could be your friend.’”

We’re happy to see that Carey is instilling important values and teaching her children so many important lessons early on. Her kids are already growing up to be super adorable, and we can’t wait to see what their future holds!
