When you turn on the radio to listen to holiday tunes this year, “All I Want for Christmas is You” is probably going to come across the station within a few minutes. Although the song is now twenty-five-years-old, it has been rising in popularity ever since it was released back in 1994. For the first time ever, Mariah Carey’s popular song has just reached the very top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

According to ET Online, It’s a rare feat for a song that is a quarter of a century-old to still be on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but “All I Want for Christmas is You” has remained a constant over the years. Back in 2018, the song managed to reach third place, but it is only this year that it managed to get the highest position.

Not only is this a huge accomplishment for a song to remain popular for this long, but it also marks some impressive achievements for Carey herself. This now makes 19 songs that Carey has had in first place on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the solo artist with the most hits on the chart.

“All I Want for Christmas is You” first made its debut back in ’94 when Carey released her famous album “Merry Christmas”. The album earned the spot as the best-selling Christmas record ever. Sony Music Entertainment’s Legacy Recordings recently re-released the album under the name “Merry Christmas (Deluxe Anniversary Edition)”.

On the record, “All I Want for Christmas is You” was the most popular song. As of now, almost 1 billion people have streamed the song around the world. In addition to being a popular song, it has been the inspiration behind a mini-documentary about Mariah Carey, a family movie, and a children’s book!

In the documentary, Mariah talked about the hit song which alone has garnished her $60 million in royalties. She explained that it didn’t start out as popular as it is now, but that it has grown over the years. She told ET Online she especially likes the line “I won’t even wish for snow” because she claims that snow is always one of her biggest wishes.

While most artists choose to release Christmas albums when they are ready to hang up their careers, Carey stood out as the young singer who was willing to take a chance and release a Christmas record right at the start of her career. We sure are glad that she did!

Walter Afanasieff, who co-wrote the song with Carey, spoke out about the day that it was written. He says as per ET Online that he was at the piano, randomly throwing out chords, while Mariah tried to think up lyrics that would fit with them.

In an attempt to make a more old-fashioned rock song that would mesh would a boogie woogie tune, Afanasieff started to pick off the notes to the now-popular song. Mariah quickly jumped in with some lyrics off the top of her head.

Looking back on that day, he says that it flowed together easily and remembers it as a “instantaneous, collaborative, and wonderful moment”.

Talent like this doesn’t happen every day, and we are so glad that we have the fruits of their labor to enjoy this season. What do you think of “All I Want for Christmas is You”?
