Mariah Carey And Daughter Monroe Cannon Team Up For Adorable Duet Of ‘Away In A Manger'

Mariah Carey is a legendary singer-songwriter, record producer and actress. She is known for her signature use of the whistle register, melismatic singing style, and impressive five-octave vocal range. She rose to fame in 1990 with her self-titled debut album. Carey has achieved many accolades and awards, including being the first artist in history to have her first five singles reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The songs were "Hero," "Without You," "All I Want For Christmas Is You," "Fantasy" and "Always Be My Baby."

Carey released her debut album under the guidance of Tommy Motolla, a Columbia Records executive who she later married and then separated from. While signed to Columbia Records, Carey released some of her most popular albums, including her famous Christmas album in 1994 titled "Merry Christmas." The album is still beloved by audiences and regains popularity every year around the holiday season. Since then, she's been known as the Queen of Christmas.

Carey said her passion for the holiday comes from not having had much to enjoy during Christmas as a child. She said her motivation behind the hit single "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was "to write a song that would make me feel like a carefree young girl at Christmas." While many of Carey’s other holiday songs are loved by fans, none quite compare to the virality of “All I Want for Christmas is You.”

Considering Carey's ties to Christmastime, it's no surprise that the diva is known to perform live during the holiday season. The audience at her Toronto concert in December 2022 was in for a treat since Carey brought out her 11-year-old daughter Monroe to sing a duet together. Read on to find out more about Carey's children and her sweet performance with Monroe.

Carey has been through many transformations in both her career and personal life, including relationship troubles with her parents and former partners. However, the star has proven to be a very devoted and loving mother to her pair of fraternal twins, who she shares with actor and comedian Nick Cannon. After dating, the couple tied the knot in 2008 but announced their separation in 2014 before finalizing their divorce in 2016.

The singer has proven that she has a real heart of gold despite her, at times, poor reputation. But what is certain is the fact that the notable star has a soft spot for her two children: fraternal twins Moroccan and Monroe. The kids were born on Apr. 30, 2011, and are now 11 years old. Carey often shares photographs and videos of her kids on social media, showing the world what a cute family they are!

She's also revealed that Monroe and Moroccan have inherited her vocal talents, so it's no wonder they've joined their famous mother on stage before. Carey told E! News:

“Honestly their tone when they sing is so beautiful, and I’m so thankful that they inherited that from me."

During Carey's Las Vegas residency, the fraternal twins used to perform "Always Be My Baby" together with her, while at the 2022 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, they danced behind her on a platform. But Carey made it clear they requested to do so themselves, as she shut down the suggestion she's a "stage mom":

“When they want to be involved and feel like it will be something fun, they show up, attend rehearsals, and get really into it. ... It’s such a joy to be able to watch them when they’re fully engaged, relating to their other friends — many of which are aspiring singers or dancers who weren’t born into the entertainment world.”

The "Fantasy" singer said she hoped that by seeing how hard she works for her success, Monroe and Moroccan might take after her strong work ethic and understand that things aren't simply handed to you. She told E! News:

“I think it’s important that they learn these lessons because I grew up without that privilege and they need to understand that it is so important to try your hardest and do your best.”

Ever the proud mom, she beamed, “It’s one of my greatest honors to watch them shine.”

However, as well as teaching them humility, Carey revealed in an interview with W Magazine that she spoils her kids at Christmas time since she wasn't afforded such luxuries while growing up.

“When you grow up with a messed-up life and then you’re able to have this transformation where you can make your life what you want it to be? That is joy for me. That’s why I want my kids to have everything they can have. I want them to be able to understand that they can be anything they want to be.”

While the twins are still young and may not know what they wish to be in life yet, their singing talents suggest they could follow in their mom's footsteps if they so wish. Monroe even dueted with her famous mom in December 2022 when Carey performed her "Merry Christmas to All" concert in Toronto. The mother and daughter sang "Away in a Manger," which beautifully showed off Monroe's skilled vocals. Following the show, Carey shared on Instagram:

“Thank you so much to alllll the Canadian fans and lambs that came out to celebrate with me at my show last night!!!! Merry Christmas to All!! ❤️🎄🎄🕊❤"
