Mara Wilson & Danny DeVito Reunite With the “Matilda” Cast in London

On a stage built for royal occasions and grand orchestras, the cast of “Matilda” came together again, and almost nobody in the audience saw it coming.
The occasion was a special screening of the film at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Danny DeVito, who directed “Matilda” and played Harry Wormwood, narrated the evening live from a leather armchair beside the conductor’s podium while the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra performed David Newman’s score alongside the film. The screening was part of the venue’s Films in Concert series, which pairs classic films with a full live orchestra for audiences of thousands.
Before the movie began, Newman teased what was coming. “We do have a very special surprise tonight,” he told the crowd. Then DeVito announced to cheers that some familiar faces were about to join him. Mara Wilson, who played Matilda, walked out alongside Pam Ferris, the unforgettable Miss Trunchbull, as well as Kiami Davael (Lavender), Jacqueline Steiger (Amanda Thripp), and Kira Spencer Hesser (Hortensia). The venue called it “the best surprise ever.”
Around 5,000 fans filled the hall, and Wilson shared the moment afterward in a post with a group photograph. “Matilda 30th Anniversary Celebration at Royal Albert Hall in London! Five thousand Matilda fans!” she wrote.
She then added a note of thanks. “What a joy to celebrate with people who mean so much to me, with whom I share so many wonderful memories,” Wilson wrote, naming each of her castmates, the composer, and, “of course, Uncle Danny.” Her closing words were simple: “I love you all.”

The nickname “Uncle Danny” says a great deal about the bond between Wilson and DeVito, and she has explained why it stuck. Speaking at an earlier event, she said DeVito “really helped me and my family when we were going through something terrible.” The film itself is dedicated to Wilson’s mother, Suzie, who died the year it was released. The man who played her on-screen father became something closer to family.
Wilson has also been candid about what making the film was like. There were hard days, she has said, but there were also days that felt like summer camp, and she remains friends with many of the people she worked with. The Royal Albert Hall gave the public a chance to see that closeness first-hand.
Not everyone could be there. Embeth Davidtz, who played the kind-hearted Miss Honey, did not attend, and Wilson replied that the group had missed her and that she was there “in spirit.”
Wilson was already a familiar young face from “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Miracle on 34th Street” when DeVito cast her as the title character. The film, adapted from Roald Dahl’s 1988 children’s novel, follows a gifted girl who uses extraordinary powers to stand up to her neglectful parents and her cruel headmistress. Its message of quiet courage is a large part of why audiences keep returning to it, and why a concert hall was the right place to celebrate it.
Decades on, the story of a small girl who outsmarted the adults around her can still fill one of London’s biggest halls.
