Man’s Lost Dog Found Again After 8 Years, Sparking Emotional Reunion

An Arizona man has reunited with his beloved dog after an eight-year separation. Paul Guilbeault’s journey with his miniature pinscher, Damian, began in Massachusetts. In 2017, during a cross-country move to Arizona, a brief stop near Oklahoma City turned tragic when Damian got spooked, slipped his leash, and vanished.
Despite exhaustive searches and a week-long delay in their move, Damian was nowhere to be found. Guilbeault and his husband were devastated over the loss of their furry friend, and their heartbreak turned into acceptance that maybe Damian was lost for good with time. Over the years, Guilbeault’s hope waned, and the pain of seeing missing posters became too much to bear.
Fast forward to January 15, 2025, while on a trip to California to donate items to wildfire victims with his husband, Guilbeault received a life-changing text that Damian had been found. He told the story of how Damian was lost and found on his Instagram account, writing:
“I get a bunch of calls I sent to voicemail cuz I’m driving, then a text come in from AKC (he’s microchipped through them) and sure as s--- someone found my freaking dog.”
Damian was found in the area where he had been lost, and Guilbeault was overjoyed at discovering that Damian had been found at last. They immediately made the trip to reunite with Damian after nearly a decade of separation, with Guilbeault sharing:
“Life is just crazy, I feel so blessed.”

Guilbeault spoke about his experience with ABC News, recalling the details surrounding his pet’s loss and eventual return. He said at one point, he began to assume the worst, and the missing posters became depressing.
“I kept trying to search, but the search dwindled as the years went on. Eventually it got to the point where just seeing his missing poster hurt too much, and I didn’t share it as often as I used to in the beginning,” he said, adding, “I thought that, honestly, he probably became food for that lion we ran into.”
He added that he and Damian had such a close bond, and the dog had been by his side through difficult moments, making the eight-year separation even more heartbreaking.
“It was devastating – that dog got me through a lot of emotional things, family issues and whatnot, just being there for me as a companion,” he explained. “I was his everything, as he was mine, and losing him was really, really tough.”
Recalling the moment he discovered that Damian had been found, Guilbeault said:
“My Apple Watch gave me a little preview, and it said, ‘Your dog, Damian, has been found,‘” he said. “And I was like, ‘What the ...?!’”
The drive back home after the reunion was an emotional one, and Damian was just as happy to have finally found his friends again.
“The whole time he was in my husband’s lap, curled up in a ball, and he would turn his head back, looking at me driving, and just have this giant smile,” Guilbeault said. “I feel like he was thinking, ‘Oh my god, is this real? Did I really find him finally?’”
Guilbeault encouraged other pet owners to take measures to ensure that they will never be separated from their furry friends for long. He said he was grateful for the microchip that was implanted in Damian, which made it easier for them to be contacted when he was found.
“Microchip your pets!” he urged. “Microchip your dogs, your cats, even your birds can be microchipped.”
We wish the reunited family all the best!
