Teachers play an important role in our lives, even long after we graduate from school. In the case of Chris Barrington, his teacher made a lasting impression, and she continues to have a major impact on his life today. His former teacher not only took Chris into her home but she threw him his first-ever birthday party.
Chris is a young man who has special needs. After his caretaker father’s late-stage leukemia made it impossible for him to keep up with his son, Chris managed to get out of the house and take to the highways of Texas. With no one to guide him, Chris wandered aimlessly for two days until the Gatesville Sheriff’s Department finally found him. When questioned about family, the only one Chris would mention was a woman named Michell Girard, reports CNN.
Michell was one of Chris’ middle school teachers, and she hadn’t seen the young man since he was in school. When the police contacted her to discover how they were related, she was stunned that he even remembered her.

Since she is in no way related to Chris, Michell wasn’t sure how to handle the situation. When asked if she would give Chris a home, she wondered what would happen if she didn’t take him. When authorities told her that he would be forced into an institution, Michell stepped up to the plate and announced “not on my watch!” to CNN affiliate KWTX
Despite the time that she had spent apart from her former student, Michell was not going to see Chris be locked away. Instead, she wanted to give him the best life possible, and she going to fight to do just that.
When Chris’ dad passed away, she set out to become the young man's guardian. During the legal process, Michell found out that Chris had never had the chance to celebrate his birthday or other holidays due to a difficult family situation.
The former teacher decided that was going to change! With the help of JMB Fishing, Michell orchestrated a boat ride to help celebrate her soon-to-be dependent’s birthday.
Michell is looking forward to introducing Chris to Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations, and is doing everything she can to provide him with a good life after all that he’s endured so far.
It’s so good to hear about a teacher who has such a kind heart and willingness to continue helping her former students even after they are all grown up. Have you had a teacher that went above and beyond to help you? Brag about them in the comment section below!
