Man With Down Syndrome Had ‘Already Written His Wedding Speech’ After First Date With His Girlfriend

Love is a beautiful thing. And the concept of two people who complement each other, finding and choosing to stay together forever, is even more beautiful. But finding love is difficult. People in the dating pool set standards that they hope their future partners will meet, canceling out every other person who falls below the set standard.

While several people are in favor of setting standards before delving into the dating pool, a person who ticks all your boxes may still not be your ideal partner. This further proves that finding love is real work. While the dating pool is hard in itself, it is even harder for people living with genetic conditions. It is common for this group of people to experience discrimination, denial, and oppression over the same adult phase of being human that typical adults enjoy in their lives.

This denial from people in the dating pool causes them to deny their feelings, making it difficult for people living with genetic conditions to express themselves. Adults with Down syndrome are among the groups of people affected by the oppression in the dating pool. Although dating among people with Down syndrome hasn’t been widely studied, the National Down Syndrome Society noted that, like most people, adults with Down syndrome have intimacy needs. This suggests that, like every adult, people with Down syndrome should be able to express their emotions and find love without discrimination.

While many people with the genetic condition can only dream about finding love, two adults with Down syndrome, Heidi Crowter and James Carter, found love in the difficult dating pool. In a self-authored post published on Sept. 3, 2023, Crowter shared the fine details of her love story with Carter.

Not many in the dating pool will know that the person they just had a date with is their lifelong partner, but it took Carter one date to know that Crowter was the one.

Carter and Crowter had a family connection and started talking to each other on Facebook in 2017. They kept the chat going due to their mutual interest in Christianity, their love for hymns, and ultimately, their love for the British sitcom “Last of the Summer Wine.”

The online relationship between the lovebirds flourished for a year until their parents confirmed that they were serious about each other. A physical meeting was set up, and when the two met each other, the flame of their online connection burned even brighter, so much so that Carter drafted his wedding speech after their first date.

"In fact, he told me he had already written his wedding speech!" Crowter shared in a chat with Metro UK.

After dating for about a year, Carter went down on bended knees to ask Crowter to marry him.

“We’d been dating for one year when James took me to my favorite restaurant and got down on one knee and asked to marry me. It was the easiest yes of my life and I jumped for joy, kissing him,” she wrote.

Besides the excitement that her favorite person had asked her to spend forever with him, Crowter was impressed that he took permission from her parents before proposing.

Preparations for their wedding started in earnest, and although they had planned to have 220 people attend the ceremony, they had to cut it down to 30 due to COVID-19 restrictions. The ceremony, which was held on July 4, 2020, at Hillfields Church, Coventry, was live-streamed on YouTube and has been viewed over 47,000 times.
