Man Travels Three Thousand Miles To Save Dog From Being Euthanized

Pit bull owners are a breed apart. They'd travel the world for the dogs they love. This was the case for Mario Rodriguez, who not long ago had lost his special friend, a pit bull named King.

Mario and King had been together for years and the bond between them was profound. Little did Mario know that soon this friendship would seem to transcended death.

Mario lived in Georgia, but he worked as a truck driver, so the whole United States was his workplace. One time, Mario was en route to California, a 3000-mile coast-to-coast trip. The highway, with its hours of solitude, was a good place to mourn King. Then one day he got a text that offered him a chance to heal his heart.

Mario's wife had found a link concerning a pit bull named Hickory who needed a new home - quickly. Naturally, she texted Mario the link. Now he saw, as she had, the powerful resemblance between Hickory and their old buddy, King. That resemblance wasn't the only thing that gripped Mario's attention. It was also the fact that, as the text made clear, Hickory was going to be euthanized if a new owner couldn't be found soon.

Once he saw that, it didn't even matter that the link gave a location 2800 miles away. Mario was a truck driver. He resolved to get there. But trucks only move so quickly, and there were speed limits to consider after all. Mario was so determined and so concerned for Hickory, that he kept in close phone contact with the animal shelter for all six days of his journey. Staff workers were reassuring. Every time Mario called, they repeated to him that they would give Hickory the time he needed.

Staff members emphasized how friendly the pit bull was, promising that he would be happy to meet his new owner. When Mario finally arrived, staff members made the introduction.

Once man and dog had returned to the Rodriguez home in Georgia, things only became more wondrous. Mario had two other pit bulls, who with their keen senses weren't likely to be impressed by any mere resemblance to their old friend King. But Hickory easily established a connection with them. The three pit bulls began playing with each other as though they were children at the playground.
