Dogs are known for their unwavering loyalty to the humans they love. It would seem that in some cases, humans can show that same kind of loyalty to dogs. That certainly proved to be the case with one extremely fortunate dog in New York.

Don Chatten is a real animal enthusiast. He has two dogs and his daughter has a pet pig. Don believes in always looking out for the well being of these beloved pets.

Chatten explained to WIVB, a local news station, "I don't want to see any dog get hurt." This incredible man doesn't just talk the talk when it comes to caring about animals, he walks the walk.

Chatten and his two dogs were out for a walk in Ellicott Island Bark Park one crisp winter day. They noticed a man who seemed to be in distress looking for something he had lost.

Chatten explained that the man told him he was looking for his little black dog. Though he hadn't seen the dog, Chatten's dog Milo noticed something in the water and let his owner know about what he'd found. Milo was staring down into the icy water. That's when Chatten started to wonder what was drawing his dog's attention.

Chatten started trying to lead Milo back to the car, but then he noticed something that made him stop in his tracks. It was a faint whimper coming from the direction of the water.

Chatten then realized that his dog Milo had located the older gentleman's missing black dog. He realized that by the time he had gone to find the owner and tell him about his dog being in the water, it would be too late. Chatten realized that the poor pooch's only chance of survival was if he would take it upon himself to come to the rescue.

Thinking quickly, he broke the ice that had formed on top of the water. He then scooped the dog up and waded through the frigid water back to shore. There, he found the dog's owner and returned him to the grateful man.

A bystander named Samantha Kelly caught the amazing rescue on her camera. She wrote about the rescue on the Friends of Ellicott Island Bark Park Facebook page, stating, "Thank God for this man." She remarked that he was "soaked head to toe" from performing this admirable feat.

When the rescued dog, Jackson, went to the vet after being rescued, he was treated for hypothermia. The dog's owner is eternally grateful to his new friends, Chatten and Milo. He wants to stay in touch with Jackson's rescuers.

Chatten has no regrets about the role he had to play in the rescue. He was happy to be in there at just the time he was needed to help save a dog's life.
