While you might move heaven and earth for your own pets, what would you do if you saw a stranger’s animal in sudden danger? Would you be willing to jump into an icy reservoir to save an animal’s life? That’s exactly what Timofey Yuriev from Yonkers, New York, did on March 9th as he watched two Golden retrievers escape their owner’s grasp and fall through the ice near the Irvington Reservoir.

Without thinking of his own safety, Yuriev immediately reacted. In only a pair of shorts, the man plunged after the dogs with his own yellow lab following behind him. Instead of attempting to drag the dogs out of the frigid waters, Yuriev created a path to escape the icy lake. Punching the surface, the man broke through the ice and gave the retrievers a passageway to safety. Yuriev’s lab quickly moved to the two dogs’ sides as though encouraging them on their escape from the icy deathtrap of the lake. The owner could not help but cry as she was reunited with her dogs. She was very grateful for Yuriev’s assistance.

Perhaps it was fate that led Yuriev down that path that day. As the man commented, he was from Kazakhstan and had often swum in freezing waters in his homeland. Therefore he did not hesitate to plunge into an icy lake when it came to saving the two retrievers.
