Man Sues Restaurant Chain For Being Off With Their Tipping Percentage Math On Checks

With servers criticizing restaurant patrons for not tipping enough, it’s no surprise that people are feeling a little uncomfortable about how much they should truly leave for gratuity. While restaurants are now suggesting a tip of 15-25% of the bill, eating out can get expensive quickly! However, it’s rarely as expensive as that of a recent patron at The Cheesecake Factory.

Marcel Goldman had enjoyed a meal at The Cheesecake Factory when he received his bill for $38.50. The bill had a suggested tip amount that offered him options between $11.50 and $16.94. Ultimately, Marcel paid an extra $15.40 and then headed on his way, reports Buzzfeed News.

It was only after Marcel had paid that he realized the serious discrepancy in the restaurant bill. Instead of paying 20%, the restaurant’s math had been significantly off, resulting in Marcel paying almost 40% gratitude on his meal.

That’s right: Marcel paid almost half as much in a tip as he did for the rest of his meal!

Marcel was not happy with the restaurant’s shaky math system. In fact, he was so disgusted that he has filed a class action suit against the entire restaurant chain.

Marcel isn’t the only one to be ripped off by restaurants. While many people simply take the restaurant at their word and pay whatever gratuity is suggested on the bill, others are taking the time to do the math and are discovering that it is often faulty.

One social media poster took a photo of their restaurant bill with the suggested gratuity listed with the correct prices handwritten beside what has been printed. While the numbers were only off by a few dollars, it is still frustrating to see restaurants ripping off their customers by overcharging for tips.

Whether you eat out every day or just once in a blue moon, stories like this remind us that we can never be too careful. Rather than relying on restaurant math, it’s worth the time to pull out your calculator and run the numbers for yourself. You can easily discover the amount for a tip by multiplying the cost of your meal by .20.

Also, experts recommend that diners who opt to split bills watch their receipts to ensure that they aren’t charged for gratuity double. Also, those who pay by credit card should not only sign their receipts but draw a line or write zeros through the tip portion of the bill.

Whether you’re dealing with faulty computer systems that have bad calculations or devious employees who want to tack on extra money for themselves, you can never be too careful when dining out.
