Steve Knoop would have likely never guessed that one day he would save a fawn. However, that is exactly what happened in May of 2014 when Knoop was driving and came across a fawn laying in the middle of the road.

It is not uncommon for fawns to populate wooded areas in the spring. Because whitetail deer start the breeding process in the fall, the babies are born between April and late July.

When Knoop came across the fawn on the road, he could tell that it was trying to protect itself. The baby had wrapped its legs under its body but Knoop soon noticed that the fawn was still breathing.

In the video, you can hear Knoop pondering what to do. Shortly into the video, Knoop notices the baby's mother watching from the adjacent forest. Knoop and his friend know that touching the fawn might irk the mother, but they also do not want to leave the helpless fawn in the middle of the road where it might be killed.

Knoop's friend, Paul, decides that they cannot simply leave the deer. So he bends down and gently scoops up the fawn, carrying it off the roadway. Although the fawn is startled at first, it gives up the struggle and allows Paul to carry it to safety.

Once the fawn is laid down in the forest, it quickly scampers off to find its mother. According to Second Chance Wildlife Center (SCWC), it is not unusual for fawns to become confused and curl up in random areas. The men did the right thing by cautiously helping the fawn to safety and back to its mother.
