Man Says That Mother-In-Law Should Force Her Sons Into One Room So That Baby Has Own Nursery

Jan 29, 2022 by apost team

Grandmothers love to care for their grandchildren and make sure their needs are met, but sometimes their children can overstep their boundaries and expect too much from them. This was certainly the case when one woman’s son-in-law, Tom, and her daughter, Avery, demanded that she make her 16-year-old and 14-year-old sons share a room so they could turn the bedroom into a nursery.

Now, if Tom and Avery lived at the woman’s house all the time, then asking for a nursery wouldn’t be so far-fetched. However, they do not and only plan on using the room when they come to visit with the baby. The woman was floored by the request and said that she does not want to make her boys share a room since they are older now. Tom pointed out that his mother had already prepared a nursery for the times they were over at her house. The woman then mentioned that Tom’s family has a lot of money, so this is why he thinks this is an abnormal request.

The son-in-law said that his child must have the nursery so they would have absolutely everything they need. The woman continued to refuse, and Avery took it personally and said she thought her mother didn’t care about the baby. To make matters worse, the author’s husband was siding with Avery and said she was favoring the boys over her daughter. Now, the woman is left wondering if she was in the wrong for refusing their plans. Keep reading to learn more about this story and to see what users on Reddit had to say about this request.

At the beginning of the woman’s post on Reddit, she explained how Tom brought up the situation, and his reasoning confused her. The author wrote:

“Tom asked me if I had emptied one of the rooms so I could turn it into a nursery yet, I was confused by his question and asked him why. He said that he expected me to, I asked why again, he looked at me and said that every decent grandmother prepares a nursery at her home specifically to welcome her grandson as a new member of the extended family.”

“Tom insisted it's necessary and that I make efforts to make sure my grandson gets everything he needs whenever they visit,” she adds.

As a way of compromising, Tom said he did not expect the woman to pay for the nursery herself. “Tom offered to pay for everything and all I have to do is empty my son's room. I said no and the argument started again with Tom saying I'm refusing to work with them on a compromise, but this is not a compromise to me,” the woman shared.

Commenters on Reddit were also floored by this outrageous request and made it very clear that the woman was well within her right to refuse the demand. One person said:

“They want your children who live there all of the time to be forced to share a room so that your grandchild, who will occasionally visit, can have its own nursery in your home? They have lost their minds. What a completely inappropriate thing to ask of your parents. It's totally normal for a grandparent to keep some toys and possibly a pop-up crib in their home for occasional visits. This is not normal or acceptable behavior.”
